Unhappy Someone help please!

Okay so I had two hamsters, Candy and Sushi. Candy was just under 2 years old, Sushi was just turned a year and a half. They are both passed now but their deaths are really odd and it’s left me so confused and guilty.
So basically they were both as healthy as ever no problems. But I came home one day to find Candy sleeping in a weird position in the middle of her cage. She never did this. So I instantly went to her and gently blew on her to wake her up and she if she was okay, she moved was struggling to move so I went to pick her up and she was stone cold to the touch, and she could not walk, she was just wobbling back and fourth if she tried. She was breathing heavy and fast, and just wanted to sleep. I heated up my pet heading pad and put her on it and wrapped her in a blanket to try warm her up. It didn’t really warm her up much and just about one/two hours later she just started like jumping and then just died, blood came from her mouth but my nan thinks she bit herself out of being in pain. I thought maybe she had a stroke and heart attack from old age. However sushi was fine, four days later after asking if candy’s toys would be safe, I put them in sushi’s cage (stupid stupid) and less than 12 hours later the exact same thing happened to sushi and I lost her within an hour two hours of finding her, only difference is I noticed sushi was making a clicking noise when breathing. Candy May have had the same but I didn’t notice it. I didn’t have any time to take them to the vets I couldn’t save them😞 so please can someone help me what happened to my fur babies??

I've just read your post. I don't know I'm afraid but I do know how awful it is to beat yourself up and think you should have done things differently. You did what you felt was ok at the time and you cared for them both - don't be hard on yourself. x

I am so sorry. It was reasonable to think it was a heart attack rather than an infection and we will never know what it was. It could even have been coincidence, especially as they were both older hamsters. Very hard. They are both playing free over the rainbow bridge now.

Yeah I guess I will never know. I’m glad they’re not suffering now though. Thank you ❤️

I'm so sorry to hear about what happened to your two little ones. It must have been terrible for you to go through losingbtwo of them like that.

Don't beat yourself up about it, I seriously doubt that a vet would have been able to do anything to help them and I also really don't think that their toys had anything to do with it.

I don't think there was anything you could have done diffetently.

Thank you for the support❤️ It was so difficult. I’ve gotten two dwarfs since and I am so paranoid about them it breaks my heart. Thank you lots though all the support is so appreciated ❤️❤️

Yes it is nerve wracking after something like that when you have more hamsters, but try to keep positive. We can only do our best and I am sure your two new dwarf hamsters will do absolutely fine. If you want to know anything come on here.

I am not sure how experienced you are, but most dwarf hamsters are hybrids - unless they are from a breeder who knows their genetics. So they may look like a winter white or a campbells but will be a hybrid of both species as this happened a long time ago, the inter-breeding of the two species. They are lovely pets but there are a few precautions - they can be prone to diabetes so need a sugar free diet. They can also be genetically predisposed to certain conditions and this may well have happened with your previous hamsters. Actually any hamster can be genetically predisposed to certain conditions - eg a weak heart or something else and we don't know. All we can do is give them a good environment to live in and a good diet. I am not sure what hamster mix you have for them but you will get plenty of advice here if you need to find a sugar free mix.

I'm very sorry about the deaths of your hamsters. If you were hearing clicking noises when Sushi was breathing, then most likely she had a respiratory infection. What kind of toys were they? What type of bedding did Sushi have? Pine shavings, Cedar shavings, and scented bedding are known to cause respiratory infections. As for Candy, if she was cold she may have gone into hibernation or she may have gotten hypothermia. That's just what I'm guessing, since I have never had that happen to my hamsters.

I did not know they were prone to diabetes, I don’t give them much sugar in treats they mostly eat mealworms. 3 a day. I give them the Harry hamster food mix (tiny friends farm). I will be sure to keep that in mind thank you
