Default New hamster advice

Hello everyone,

I've just brought my new Russian dwarf hamster home a few hours ago. He started exploring his new cage pretty quickly and even got onto the wheel for a run. After a little while he retreated into the corner and he's stayed there ever since. I know he'll be feeling a bit scared having come into a new house but I'm a bit concerned that he's not gone into his hamster house or burrowing into his bedding or anything.

Is this normal?

Good to hear you've brought a new furball home. It's a massive change for him to go through, and he's probably feeling overwhelmed by everything just now. Leave him to settle for a while, and he will find his hamster house soon enough. Just talk to him quietly so that he gets to know your voice, and starts to realise that this is the new normal.

Is this your first hamster? What is his name?

Hello!

Don't worry, this is completely normal. Normally it is advised that you leave the hamster alone for 24 hours just so they can get used to their environment but I know from experience that is very difficult! He will eventually come out of his shell and start to explore his new home!

I hoped this helped and good luck!

Don't panic as the others say it's completely normal. I didn't see ghost or Niko much for the first couple of weeks.

Hi everyone, thanks for the advice!

He did eventually come out and find his house the other night and he's been running a lot on his wheel so he's been quite active. I don't think he's been drinking much water though.

@Petite, this is my first hamster and his name is Hammy.
