Default Bad bedding shaving uses

Before switching to a carefresh paper bedding, without knowing anything I bought a lot of unnamed wood shavings ( probably pine). I was just wondering if there is any use for it, or should I just trash it?

I use used bedding to light fires in my patio chimnea. Wood shavings would be ideal to start a fire in a chimnea or open fire if you have one.

Thats a really good suggestion. If they are pine they will burn very easily and will probably be quite aromatic. We put pine cones or a pine log on the fire in winter and it gives a lovely scent.

You could also put it on your garden if you have one. Around any plants or crops. It'll just mulch down into nothing and add a bit of nutrients to the soil

If you have a garden you can put it round plants to stop the slugs eating your plants. Will also rot down eventually into the soil.

I would second Luna's reply. We put used shavings on our flowerbeds and it helps to keep the weeds down.

But are wood shavings really so bad? I've just bought another big bag for our impending new arrival. We always used wood shavings for our hammy, and were planning to do the same with the new one - just a thin-ish layer in a 'playground' type are, and then paper substrate in a much thicker layer that will allow her to burrow. Would it be okay to use it like that? I've not seen anything else available here, so had to order the paper substrate online.

Wood shavings are certainly capable of being very problematic for hamsters and many other pets. Even if you've never experienced allergies with your hamsters, they do exist with all wood shavings - and they don't appear right away every time. Some allergies take a huge portion of a pet's life to even show up, and it can even be to "safer" wood like aspen. Because you can't predict with certainty that nothing will ever happen for the entire lifespan of a given pet(and knowing that even kiln dried shavings can release phenols once rehydrated such as urinated on or even with a bit of water or moist foods), I would just stick to paper or hemp.
