Default Hamster male/female ratio?

Hello. Just a random question, is the general hamster population split roughly 50% male and 50% female?

The reason I ask is that I have had five hamsters in total, all of whom I got completely at random and four have been males. So many people on here have male hamsters too, so I was wondering if there are generally more male hamsters than females?

Impossible to say but pet shops usually have equal numbers of male and female hamsters available. I recently came across a male dwarf called Lola in the adoption centre which confused me a bit.

We tend to keep more males than females. We have also found that males tend to live longer in general and we can have several generations on males in the hamstery at one time. Just now we have our oldest (nearly 3) Fergus, Great Uncle, Dad - Nico and youngster Vincent. We also have two male dwarfs Klaus WW and Norman Chinese. Females just Rosetta and Crumble (adopted) Syrians. Litter wise we usually have equal numbers or slightly more females in litters.

I've had more males than females over the years but have had a lot more health problems in females, Russian & Chinese, much as I love my girls I do tend to go for males most often after the heartbreak of girls dying young.
I currently have 1 female & 3 males.

One pet shop told me that they usualy get males and breeders keep females for breading purposes.

Generally speaking I've had more males as I can show them longer before I use them for breeding but also because it gives any illnesses such as diabetes the chance to show itself before breeding.

At the moment I've got 4 Male Campbells, 1 Male Winter White, 3 Male Roborovski, 1 Male Chinese, 1 Female Syrian, 4 Female Chinese and 2 Female Roborovski.

My last surviving litter (which was two years ago now) consisted of six males to one female but the next generation on that line (who were bred by a friend) consisted of entirely females.

Thank you to everybody for your replies.

Two of my hamsters are pet shop hamsters (a female and a male bought 18 months apart) and three were rescues (all males).

It might be just random chance or perhaps there is something in the theory that females are kept by breeders for breeding as Ithuviel said.

I was talking to someone who works in PAH and they said they normally have more males in than females because where source there hamsters from keep the females back to breed from again. So this will impact the rescue population as well.

Usually I believe the US is behind in their thought processes surrounding animal well being. However I will say that I learned one of our most popular pet store chains has all male or all female stores. They don't want to take the chance of selling a "momma to be" and she not get the special care needed because the owner wasn't aware of her condition. I was impressed as it could mean someone goes to the competition in order to skip the drive to the next city for gender they want.
