Default A hamster from the 1980's

I found this the other day, It is my 2nd hamster I had in the 1980's.
He was called Danny. He is the only hamster I have ever bought. My 1st hamster I adopted from a girl that went on to be an RSPCA inspector which always makes me laugh. I guess she learnt to look after animals a little bit better when she got older! I don't have a photo of my first hamster as I didn't own a camera back then. I think I took this photo with a 2nd hand camera that someone gave me when I was about 11.

Lovely to see Luna. I had one in the eighties as well. He wasn't actually mine - he just moved in with me with a boyfriend! But I got really attached to him. He had a terrible cage! But we left the door open all the time and he free roamed. How he survived is amazing as he used to climb the curtains!

I think mine climbed the curtains too, and one of them certainly ate the curtains when I placed his cage too close to my bedroom curtains one time..found shredded remnants in his bed, ooops... lesson learnt!

Fancy finding a photo of a pet hamster from the 80's!!

Wished i had a photo of my first pet, a guinea pig called Mopsi back in the early 70's and there was always a cat called Pfiffikus about which belonged to my granny.

I had guinea pigs in the 70's/early 80's too. The old classic, got two from the pet store, one turned out to be a female and one was male.. they had babies.. all of which died. I was so upset.

A few years back I was sorting out my dads slides and scanning them in to make JPEGs so the family could all have digital copies and I came across this, it is the only photo I have of one of my guinea pigs.

That’s lovely that you have a photo of your guinea pig. Don’t have any of my first hamster but can still see picture him well in my mind. In those days I think there were only golden hamsters. I am sure there were other colours but you only ever saw golden ones. When we saw Charlie in the pet shop nearly 6 years ago, I said - that can’t be a hamster- he’s the wrong colour! He was banded. And he grew enormous! We always reckoned his grandad was a guinea pig

That's funny, part guinea pig! I don't think I realised all the different colours of hamsters. In the 80's I had cinnamon and golden - so classic colours there. my friend had a long haired light coloured hamster, but can't quite remember the colouring of it. Your comment made me go off down a rabbit hole of hamster colours
i found this

Yes, I was really happy to find that Guinea pig photo, as I had no idea my dad had it.
