What a lovely and fun hamster home Polo has! I really like Polo's set up and she will be a very happy hamster in there.

Peeing places. Yes, well, i have once started a thread about Henry's peeing places and changing habits and in the end concluded that a hamster will pee where a hamster wants to pee.

Touch wood, he's been peeing in his large Rodipet ceramic corner toilet which doesn't sit in a corner anymore and is located outside his house for quite a while now and nowadays he prefers to pee in sand.

He used to pee in the small Rodipet ceramic corner toilet inside his house which he also used as a bin until the day he decided to use it as a food store only.

I chuckled at the M&S clothes size reference...

Some help needed, Polo has started frantically chewing her cage, she is in an Alaska, the corners are vertical bars and slightly wider than the others, she has made her face sore where she shoves it through this gap and chews.
She obviously wants out, but she is doing this once we have gone to bed. I have checked her wheel, and for the moment attached some card over the corners to stop her. She comes out daily and the more I let her free roam the more she wants out!
I will attach some photos of her set up when I get home from work.
The only thing I have changed is that about 2 weeks ago I removed her food bowl and started scatter feeding, mainly to give her more space on the ground.
She has whimzees and currently has half a hedgehog and toothbrush in her horde.
She is quite clever and just. Bit manipulative, she will give us a little press of her teeth if we don’t do what she wants, it’s not a bite, just a threat lol
I hardly clean her environment at all as she pees in her sand bath and I can just clean her pees from that daily.

I really like your set up a lot and can't suggest any improvements.
I'd put her food bowl back in and scatter feed half the food. They can get funny when we remove something that's theirs.
See if that helps.

Polo is such a cutie and very photogenic, love the cage set up, as Ria P says they can get funny when you remove things from their environment

Another video of Polo during her out of cage run around, she is in the small bedroom with plenty of cardboard play and hide things, cereal boxes tubes etc but is obsessed with trying to get under the door, so I’ve put a big old floor cushion in the way. I’m sure this is natural behaviour as she closes her eyes as if she digging in dirt or just in bliss but it would be good to have another opinion. I really don’t want her ripping up the carpet! Ignore the decoration it was like it when we moved in. Even in a massive double bedroom she does the same and heads straight for the door! She doesn’t exhibit digging behaviour in her cage unless he really mess her substrate into piles then she flattens it out again.

My Syrian hamster always goes to the same corner of his free roaming room to strip the wallpaper and he does it with a lot of enthusiasm. He's usually a very laid back hamster who is not known for energetic outbursts.
I've put a large cardboard backed brown envelope in his stripping corner which he also gets his teeth into but he will still hop around, try to climb behind the envelope and push it out of the way to get to the wallpaper.

You could try and shove a piece of cardboard under the door that folds up on itself or simply sit in front of the door yourself to see what happens then.

One of my other hamsters pulls on things when out of her cage like the buttons or sleeves of my cardi or sparkly bits on my Tshirt, a blanket, the carpet, anything that's pullable and she'll have a go.

Never does it in her cage same as my wallpaper stripper never strips anything in his cage.

All normal hamster behaviour in my opinion but they have their preferences and variations just like humans.

Thank you Ria that’s so reassuring. I stiffed an old blanket in the gap last night and she did the same with this, I happy to let her reck that

Today almost a year after getting her I did my first and Perhaps only full clean out! She is in an Alaska which has lots of auboise substrate and a big sand pit.
I have a spare Alaska base so was able to fill it with fresh substrate and sand, lift her house and bedding across and then just lift the cage sides over sprinkle a few handfuls of old auboise over the top and all done!
So if you can find a second base this makes for a really easy stress free for hammy clean out!
