Default If you had a hamstery...

So the definition of a hamstery is "an establishment for breeding and raising hamsters". Since I don't intend ever breeding hamsters I guess I'll never have a hamstery, but I have noticed that some hsmsteries have very imaginitive names and was just wondering, if you had a hamstery, what would you call it?

I know there are some members of this forum who do have hamsteries - Metallica Hamstery comes to mind - (by the way I love that name, I'm a huge Metallica fan!) but for those of us who don't, what would you name yours?

It would be Cosmic Hamsters of course, although I would never breed. Maybe it could be the name of my rescue one day... i can dream...

I would call mine "Normandy Hamstery", as I have a connection to Normandy and absolutely love the place. Like Luna, I would never breed them but would love to have a hamster rescue one day.

I'm not settled on any exact name when it comes to a hamstery name, but I've had thoughts of of something Elvis related for a horse ranch. These may just feel like dreams, but a certain famous Disney song does say "Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling through".

I honestly think I'd be more likely to breed horses than hamsters. While hamsters can be less complicated, there's just something absolutely awe inspiring for me in horses. I can only explain it by saying that there's some weird soul-deep connection, weird as it may sound, which is saying a lot since pretty much any animal ever at least likes me. There is a good amount of family history with horses, but I can't say for sure just what causes it.

AmityvilleHams, my wife has been involved with horses since a child and she has exactly the same as you describe - a sort of soul-deep connection to them. I think something Elvis - related for a horse ranch sounds perfect!

My wife has a really beautiful thoroughbred mare called Peggy and I would love her to have a foal but my wife is very nervous of the potential risks involved. It must be so rewarding to see a baby horse grow up though.

As I said before, I'd never breed hamsters as I'm not into showing them and there are sadly so many of them needing homes that I'd be perfectly happy if I had a 'rescue hamstery' to look after unwanted hamsters.

I don't think you need to breed hamsters to call yourself a Hamstery. I'd define it as a place where hamsters are cared for. I know lots of people who have hamstery names but do not breed hamsters. If you register a name in the UK with the National Hamster Council you use that name to enter shows however the hamsters you enter are not necessarily ones that you have bred. They are ones that live with you and are cared for by you. It's like your home - you can name it what you wish or keep a traditional name that it has already had when you moved in.

I might call it Harley Hamstery, a combo of my two passions. I would never breed or run a rescue because i would struggle to part with a hamster. If i had a rescue, i would vet potential adoptive parents so thoroughly, lecture them on proper hamster care, demand to see the set up, insist on signing a legaly binding document never to use a hamster ball that people would run a mile and label me as the crazy hamster lady.

I wouldn't be able to part with a hamster either. The "re-homing" would purely entail the hamsters coming to live with me. Full stop.

The rescue organisation that I got Nanuk and Norman from requires adoptive hamster-owners to sign a detailed and legally binding contract stating amongst other things that the hamsters must have a suitable habitat (which they check before handing over the hamster), must always have the necessities, must be provided with veterinary care and the vet's name and contact details must be provided at the time of adoption which is checked as not all vets see hamsters, may not be bred at all, must give permission for regular home inspections, must give details of a person who will look after the hamster should the adopter be ill or go away, may not be re-homed by the adopter, regular updates must be given to the rescue organisation throughout the hamster's life... It is very thorough indeed and rightly so!

I honestly take my hat off to people who run rescue organisations.

RiaP - I like the name Harley Hamstery! I can imagine your hamsters on miniature Harleys with leather jackets and helmets on They could form a hamster biker association of their own... "Hell's Hamsters".

I remember asking myself what I'd call my hamstery when I joined this forum and Metallica Hamstery was certainly not what I originally had in mind!

I wanted something with meaning but nothing too cutesy (so Fluffagrams was out) so I was originally thinking of something with a geographic basis. At the time Wessex Hams existed and Aquae Sulis had apparently been used by another exhibitor for many years. I was stumped and in hindsight I probably should have taken more time to think of an alternative name rather than going with the first alternative I could think of. I could change it I suppose but your prefix becomes part of your identity in the hamster world and people have come to associate me with the name Metallica Hamstery.
