When I adopted my Syrians the rescues wanted to know
Cage dimensions
Pictures of setup sent to them
Wheel pictures and size
Food and bedding
Out of cage time
Wanted detailed info on hamster cage
Signed forms about breeding and if you're unable to care to return them to the rescue
Able to get vet attention
Any animals in the house
Cleaning and who's primary carer

Very thorough and took DAYS to go through. Totally worth it though

LOL!!!! yes, with Henry as the elected president. He has already claimed ownership of a helmet and sits in it grooming when taking a rest from free roaming.

I only ever adopted from pets@home adoption section. Takes a few minutes and all they do is record your name and address.
I'm really impressed with the rescues you and Vierville have adopted from.

I think pet stores in general probably don't do as much as the better rescues/shelters/etc out there. I went through a chain pet store and bought my hamster, but there was still a contract - nothing massive, but I do remember there being a part basically binding you to provide vet care when needed. I wish I knew if I still had Bambi's papers so I'd be able to check them and see what the terms were specifically, but I know it wasn't just a matter of paying and taking a hamster.

In my time I've got hamsters from a variety of sources and the most thorough process I've been through was when I got my first hamster from a breeder. The pet shops didn't really seem too worried as long as I said I had a cage like one of the ones on the shelves (bin cages were an alien concept to them) and gave my name and address and the only rescue I took on from a non-owner surrender situation just seemed to want the hamster in a home that had some experience with Chinese Hamsters (because they are more challenging than Syrians apparently).

As a breeder myself, I will ask prospective owners about what caging they have in mind, the foods they plan to feed as well as asking them to sign a declaration that if they can no longer keep the hamster then they will return them to me but most of the babies I bred went to other breeder/exhibitors anyway.

If I had a hamstery, I would call it Hobgoblin Hamstery - for no other reason than liking the name!

The 2 rescues I adopted from Austin's have minimum requirement for cages, something like 80x50, they check your home out and the cage set up and i think I had to send a photo, but I already sent them a link to my YouTube channel so that gave them a pretty good idea of what I am like! You also have to sign a form that I think says you won't breed from them and if for any reason you can't keep them they go back to the rescue. I also think if she has little ones with special needs e.g. blind or need a quiet home, they check you out a bit more too.

Ria, I can see Harley hamstery becoming a reality one day, do we need to warn your other half I do agree with you though, I would find it hard letting them go, but I guess you just have to tell yourself you are helping more hamsters by getting them adopted. I would love to do it one day, but maybe only on a small basis as I don't think I could cope with a lot of heartache that I know is involved.

I thought it would be hard to see my babies go but it's not as bad when you know that you've found a lovely home for them and you keep getting updates on them throughout their lives.

The biggest heartache with breeding is when things go wrong and things do happen despite your best efforts... last year I had one culled litter and a phantom pregnancy and back in 2017 I had a mother die after giving birth. She culled the pups not long before she died.

Fluffagrams, It must be a truly awful feeling of helplessness when that happens - how shocking and upsetting. Absolutely heartbreaking.

Conversely, that is 'nature' and while they are wonderful and adorable creatures, hamsters are still governed by animal instincts which are far removed from our own. I guess it is also really hard on an owner as they must wonder what,if anything, they could have done differently?

Knowing that a hamster has found a loving home and getting regular updates however must be so rewarding.
