Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
I've started using Kaytee Clean and Cozy as substrate for my dwarf hamsters' cages and after three weeks I did a complete substrate change as I used to do when I used Carefresh. (i do a spot clean every two or three days of the spots where they urinate).
When I checked the substrate I found that it still appeared very clean and had very little odour which made me think, how often do other hamster owners do a full substrate change if they use Kaytee Clean and Cozy?

Re: Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
Simple answer, never!
I just spot clean where they pee as needed & then do partial cage cleans every few weeks or so, I find they tend to get a lot of old poo left around the wheel area so I'll do that & if they've been doing a lot of digging (mine are all Chineseys so they do!) & get old food etc mixed deep into the substrate I'll do that when it looks like it needs doing but I never do the whole cage at once, it really doesn't need to be done & it's better for the hams to always leave some of their scent in the cage.

Re: Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
I'm still new to owning hamsters. Had one when I was a child but didn't know any better. I completely cleaned out the cage once a week.
I used to replace 1/3 of the bedding when I started owning hamsters again in October. Now I just remove soiled bedding and add fresh if needed.

i replace it every 1-2 months, but its depending on the size of your cage. What are the square inches of your cage?

Re: Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
Two of my cages are 1440 square inches of substrate-covered floor space and the other two have 862 square inches of substrate-covered floor space (these cages have a second upper level which is almost the same floor area again but with no substrate).
I fill the substrate to a depth of about 3 to 5 inches.
I'm also thinking to change the substrate every 6 weeks to 2 months as there was really no odour or anything necessitating a total substrate change at 1 month. I spot clean every two to three days and this seems to work in keeping everything clean and odour free.

Re: Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
Vierville, you could go longer than 2 months especially for your largest cage size - especially if you increase substrate depth. Cages of such a size could even go the entire lifespan of a hamster without a full cleaning ever being done unless medically necessary if they have enough substrate depth!

Re: Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
Thank you AmityvilleHams - that is really interesting and would be kinder for the hamsters too I'd imagine as it would eliminate the stress of having their familiar scents taken away. I appreciate the advice. They absolutely love deeper substrate anyway.

Re: Kaytee Clean and Cozy change interval
I'm following this thread with interest as I'm about to take delivery of a new Detolf (so 1088 square inches) and plan to use Kaytee Clean & Cozy. I always did more or less full cage cleans when my hammy was in her Ferplast cage, but as the Detolf is considerably larger, I was wondering how often a full clean and change of substrate might be necessary. I was thinking perhaps a half cage clean every 3 months, with spot cleaning once a week. Would that be enough?
