hey everyone! i'm not entirely new to hamster care, as i used to own a few hamsters when i was a kid, but can safely say i know much more about hamster care now. my mother and i just rescued a hamster off of craigslist in our local area, as the size cage she was in was perhaps the smallest cage i've ever seen.
we currently have her in a bin cage, with plans to get a bigger and better bin cage (well over the 450 min) this upcoming sunday, once the next pay period begins!
upon checking her over we noticed that she seems to 'squint' with one eye, which immediately makes me wonder if she has some kind of eye injury, or perhaps might even be blind in that eye. currently, i don't know of any vets in my area that treats small animals, as i live in a very small town. she seems to be behaving normally, eating food and making nests in her preferred house, and being generally nervous like hamsters always are when you first bring them home (something i hope to see improve once we get her a larger habitat, wheel, and plenty of toys)
i'm just looking for suggestions right now, of course. we aren't the type of people to go out and pick up animals at the drop of a hat, but seeing an animal suffering is hard to ignore when you know you can provide a much better home for them. are there any 'at home' things i can do to try and clear up anything (a friend of mine suggested looking into things like eye drops, but i don't want to do anything dangerous myself) or should i look around in hopes of finding a vet who could treat her?
i'll link the best picture i have of her eye below, and hopefully, it's good enough to give you an idea! her other eye seems perfectly fine.
