Default What Are Things to do/play With Hamster?

Hi everyone,

I really want to play/do more things with my hamster, but I'm not sure what would be good. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you!

I'm always doing 'silly' little things with my little ones. Making them bordeom breakers and letting them climb all over me - whether in a bath tub or a safe sectioned place of the house. I just love interacting with them. I make them 'stupid' things out of old boxes such as a rubbish maze and then let them play with that out of their cages. As long as food is involved somewhere along the way they seem to be happy!

Making a maze is a great idea. We did it with our little ones. Just get some cardboard boxes, cut strips out of it (for a dwarf hamster the strips need to be about 15cm high otherwise they can climb over!) and tape the strips to a base or to a tile/wood floor and then put food in the centre. You can time which one of your hamsters gets to the middle quickest.

Okay, thank you!

I'd love to make a maze, that sounds fun! Would an amazon box be okay to use (worried about ink or tape residue). Would tape (like scotch tape) be safe for them?

What other "stupid" things do you make for them, LunaTheHamster1? A maze doesn't sound stupid! Also, how would I go about making boredom breakers?

Creampuff, the problem with tape is if they nibble on it, you don't want them ingesting it or it getting stuck on their teeth. So if you are supervising your hamster and he/she isn't a chewer it's not that dangerous, but if you were to leave it in their cage I would not be using tape. I have used a non toxic safe (ish) glue in the past. I have stuck boxes together and made different shaped holes all over the boxes.

This is a link to a playlist of videos of some of the things I have made for my hammies, including one of the mazes.

Also in this video you can see how I leave my yoga stuff out for my hamsters to play with and a few boxes from the recycling! Even blankets/fleeces for them to burrow under- just supervise and make sure they don't chew. I hope this gives you some ideas on what you can do with your hamster.

I also designed a fleece maze where I worked out where my mum needed to sew and she sewed tunnels into some fleece for me that my old girl Luna used to like. I don't think I have a video of that. I will have a look. Ha, can't find the video but you can see it in my thumbnail pic on the left (doh, I just spotted that)

I definitely agree with LunaTheHamster1. Tape, glue (even once dried) etc is only safe if you are supervising them.

We only put them in the maze outside their cages and only when they were being supervised. Our ones luckily didn't show any interest in chewing but that doesn't mean that other hamsters would not.

There is a really nice book about homemade hamster projects using household items...I will find the title and post a photo of the cover once i have found it. It contains some very creative ideas for fun things to make for your hamsters!

That sounds great, thank you so much!

I will defanitly watch her so she doesn't nibble on the tape. How big should the maze be?

Thank you for all your help!!

The maze we made was roughly 1 metre by 1 metre. It took my wife and I perhaps an hour to make. For a dwarf hamster this size was perfect and If I recall correctly it took our brighter hamster about 1min30sec to find the treat in the centre of the maze!
