Default Re: Mrs. Nibbles is stuck in a wall

Okay, I have decided to come out of full panic mode so here is the full story. I woke up scratching in my bathroom. Instantly I think of a mouse or something, I looked in Nibble's cage and she was nowhere to be found. I end up going into full panic mode. I tore my bathroom apart still not seeing her... but I could hear her. So, I went through my closet (the bathroom wall is part of my closet), went through EVERY and I mean EVERY piece of clothing. Still no hamster. Finally, after an hour I found a hole in my cabinet. I drilled a little hole and saw her nose. I did what I had to do and cut a big enough hole for her. After 3 hours I finally lured her out halfway. She went back in... I got her to come out of the top... halfway out she went back in... I was panicking even more. Thinking if she dies how will I get her out? She ended up crawling up the side of the wall (where the two walls meet) I got scared that there might be another place she could go if she keeps going so I turned on a high pitched sound and scared her down. My boyfriend ended up coming over and I showed him my situation. We left to get food and I put her tub next to the hole (before that I put her ball right next to it with peanut butter around the rim). I leave and have to come home because my boyfriend lost his wallet. I'm walking upstairs and I think wow it would be great if I heard her wheel right now AND SURE ENOUGH, I DID. I ran to the door, opened it slowly so I didn't scare her, I yanked the tub over and grabbed her. Now she is back home and safe. She is eating, walking around, no indications of being hurt. She is sleeping in a corner right now, and I'm checking up on her to make sure she is still breathing. Wow That was a not so fun adventure.

Great news - so her tub/cage near the hole worked. Now you need a really secure cage! By tub I assume you mean a bin cage? Also tubes between bin cages can be an escape route and so can leaving the lid off (they can scale up to the top using the back of the wheel).

I am not sure what country you're in but a cage with one larger floor area, might be better - with a secure door and plenty of ventilation. They are also much happier with one continuous larger space, than two smaller ones joined together.

This may sound daft but for some reason my hamsters can't resist a brush and will follow it. I got tired (literally) waiting for my Syrian to come out from under the futon the other night and he followed a pastry brush out trying to catch it.
If i hold the patry brush up my dwarf will follow it walking on his back legs. Its weird. Maybe a small long handled paint brush would work or tape a small brush to a long stick.

I'd be honest with your dad. I'm sure that he could fix the hole once your hamster is out. Its not something you've planned on happening. B&Q sells clips to secure lids for £1. The really useful boxes are good because they have clip on handles.

Just saw the good news that she's back!

So glad you have now found her. Go over her cage very carefully and make it really secure now won't you. If you are not convinced it is then put it in a place where if she does get out she won't either fall or be able to get far so maybe in a dry bath with the plug in or build a pen around it.
