Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
Hello.
My dear sweet little Monty is 1 year 5 months old and has only ever lived in one cage her whole life.
I have just moved her into a brand new single-level cage with more floor space and no fall hazards. I decided to install a Ferplast drinking bottle. Which has a 'push-in' type spout compared to the normal ball type one but this morning I found her standing next to the bottle licking the side of the spout. She looked quite agitated and when I tried to show her how to use it with my finger she thirstily drank the drops on my finger.
Has anybody had a similar issue getting a hamster used to a slightly different bottle or am I unique in having a less than optimally intelligent hamster?
I've replaced her old bottle in her new cage and removed the new Ferplast one but would still like to use it.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
I don't like the sippy bottles. They are notorious for sticking and the hamsters have issues getting the water out of them and as you have found out you get a thirsty hamster. I would stick with the old type classic bottles.

Thanks Souffle, I appreciate the advice. I won't use the Sippy bottle.

Re: Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
It depends on the hamster. Our first Syrian coukdn’t use it either and hated it and got agitated. Our Robo was fine with it (tiny hamster and he could just reach up to it).

Re: Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
This may sound like a dim question but is there an ideal height that the spout should be at?

Could be worth trying a water dish if their not getting along with water bottle, using both simultaneously.

Re: Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
I have changed all mine to water dishes now and luckily they have all been fine. I think someone on here recommended the Rodipet dishes. They are the perfect size and don't tip over and at least you won't need to worry about the bottles not working properly.

Re: Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
I am going to get some tiny water dishes and put those out as well as their bottles.

Re: Hamster struggling to figure out new water bottle
Well I know our Syrian couldn't seem to bend his neck to drink from it. With our robo I had it a bit higher up - so he had to stand on his back legs a bit to reach it to drink from which was a better drinking angle, coming from underneath. But I had to be careful it wasn't so high that he couldn't reach it if the substrate compressed down a bit.
