There has been discussion on this before I think. The only colours they can see are blue and green I seem to remember. They also have some very complex cone receptors in eyes. The thing I read about before was that light affects their circadian rhythms - so even though they can't see the colour red, it is possible that they do need total darkness at times. However they can achieve that by going to their house if they have a dark house

Henry made this point at 04.30 today when i came down and stupidly switched the ceiling light on instead of his red lights. He was sitting on a degu shelf looking around and waiting, probably waiting for me to go back to bed and turn the lights off and when i didn't because i was watching Gordon frolicking around, he came down from his shelf and went into his house!
I wonder what would have happened had i switched on their red lights only............then turned them off again of course, when i left the room.
I knew Henry came out again later because some seeds had gone in the morning.

Yes they do make their feelings known sometimes! We can only do what we can as we have to live as well and I haven't had any issues with our previous hamsters. I think personally I wouldn't leave any lights on overnight but the red lights would look very nice in the evening - which is a time they are supposed to be awake anyway! Or during the day when they're asleep. Something I have always wanted to do, which some people have, is record them all night - there are cameras that can do this in the dark via infrared.

Yes, same here. I even went as far as buying one of those cameras but when faced with technology, setting it up with apps etc, I sent it back. Like mobile phones, things don't come with proper manuals and instructions anymore and people of my generation often are techno phobes, well, i am anyway.

So update on LED lights on my robo. I've set them above the cage in a grid and i switch them on before he woke up. He did come around the first time and did his hamster things, however, last night (the second time i had the lights on) he did not come out even thought i waited until around 1 AM in total silence. He came out, ate some egg and rushed back inside. I waited about 20 min more and then went to sleep.

I'm really heart broken because about 1 week ago he decided that he wants nothing to do with me. He avoids me and my husband at any cost. He used to come out some times during the day run a bit on the wheel, take a sandbath etc. Now he doesn't and even in the evenings i don't get to see him any more. I don't know that to do. What if he is sick or something and i can't tell because i can't see him any more.

I just want to see my hamster, i haven't bothered him with taming aver since he decided to avoid me.

So my conclusion is that maybe he does see the light.

Our Robo mostly comes out after 01.00 but i don't take it personal. Best time to watch our Robo is in the early morning around 05.00. At that time he is at his most relaxed i think and comes onto my hand to get seeds.
I look at his sand pit in the morning when i haven't seen him for a couple of days or more and can tell that he's alive and active by the way the sand has been dug up and the messy state of his wheel.
A clean wheel and tidy sand pit would worry me because he loves his sand and wheel.

Do you think that your hamster does not come out at all? Has his food been left undisturbed? Are there no paw prints in his sand bath or any signs of activity?
If there's no sign of any nocturnal activity at all i'd go looking for him and check that he's ok.

Our Syrian more often than not gives me a look when out and then disappears into his house. On the very rare occasion he does ask to come out by sitting by his door. It's a major event in our household and extra special to see him in a sociable mood.

All our dwarf wants to do is bite my fingers.

What i'm saying is that out of three hamsters not one of them appears to like me but unlike you, i'm not upset by it but rather amused by their grumpy little personalities.

Your hamster probably still comes out during the day but you just happen not to be around at the time. I don't think that he's suddenly gone off you a week ago. Maybe your Robo simply enjoys doing his own hamster thing in the lovely habitat you provide for him. The time of the year could also have something to do with it.

A night vision camera is still an option to observe your hamster.

I didn't know this although it makes no difference to my current hamster as natural light doesn't bother him although he is opposite side of the room to the window so that probably helps.

I'm quite sensitive to light and colour (hurts my eyes and gives me headaches) so this is actually useful for me 😅

Ria, he does come out, i see him every day. He used to come out like at least 10 min every time. Now he does just do something fast then he goes away in one minute. An at night he used to come out for good at around 23:30 now if we are around he comes out deos something fast then goes in his house. I'm just a nervous new hamster owner. I just got scared that maybe there is something wrong and he is trying to hide because he is a prey animal and they hide illness.

So there is nothing to worry about? Thank you for the assurance.

Sounds all like normal hamster behaviour to me. Our Robo used to get up at 22.00 for a couple of weeks when we first got him, then he got up later and later, now its 01.00+. I have no idea why but hamster behaviour is a mystery to me anyway. Wished someone would write a comprehensive hamster behaviour guide so i could understand the little critters.
You think you get to know them and their routines and then they suddenly decide to change everything, get up at different times, pee in a different place, totally ignore you for ages and then suddenly seek your company for half an hour or so. Thing is, they very much have minds of their own and things have to happen on their terms. That's my experience with my hamsters anyway but i've only kept some since March this year.
I expect nothing of them and simply enjoy watching them being hamsters. When they let me handle them and only one of my three does, i feel quite flattered. They are fascinating little creatures.

One thing i want to point out is that hamsters are very nosy. They are usually keen to investigate something new, like a new food or toy so try and give him variety but don't change his things around.
