Smile Meet Bailey

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce my new little friend, Bailey. She's a young Syrian (she shared a cage with other hamsters in the pet shop) and you can see her in the pic below.

Since being in her new house (Savic Plaza), she has discovered she enjoys making burrows more than saying hello to humans - 5" of substrate has kept her busy. In fact she's very shy and hides if she knows I'm there. But I'm being patient as she is young and has had a stressful week!

Any tips for taming young/shy hamsters are welcome. I hope I can share more of her adventures as she grows up.

Beautiful little cream banded girl. <3

Every hamster is different so follow her lead. Giver her companionship and sweet talk her, she needs to hear you and smell you. When she is settled enough she will be inquisitive and express interest in her new family, at which point you could put your hand in the cage and rest it on the floor. Again, she needs to learn who you are, which is a loving owner, not a predator. Treats work a charm.

Congratulations on bringing home your beautiful baby xo

Congratulations Otaku, Bailey is gorgeous!
Talk softly to her whenever you see her, also talk to her when she can't be seen, this will get her use to your voice, also try the tissue trick, get some unscented toilet paper and stuff it up your sleeves for a couple of hours then put in her cage, curiosity will have her sniffing the paper, do this daily for a week as this will get her use to your scent and it makes great bedding. I also find praising them builds their confidence.

I have had my dwarf for about 6 weeks now and I have switched from a bigger cage with deep burrows to smaller cage with less, to see which would be best for taming.

I have found that being in a big cage with deep burrow seems to bring wild instincts back and my hamster does not come out, or very little. He stays underneath his bedding and will only come out late at night. If he sees me coming near the cage, he flees. I see him maybe every three days, and cannot handle him except when I clean the bin and remove bedding.

Since he is still a baby, he needs work to be tamed so I put him back temporarily in his smaller cage, so he learns to be handled and that humans are his friend. He behaves very differently in a smaller cage with less bedding. He comes out during the day, bathes in the sand, sits in his wheel and snacks in open areas. And strangely, he doesn’t run away at all and lets me handle him. I handle him every day once or twice for a few minutes, and so does my family when they visit. Very good for taming.

So I have decided to have him in his smaller bin for a while, then when he’s a little older, he’ll go back to his bigger bin with lots of bedding, and if then he decides he’d rather not have interactions with me, then I will provide the best habitat I can and let him be.

Hi Dessi, I have an 18 month old Syrian and have noticed the same thing. He has only had a larger cage for a little while but he has become much less social since he has had a natural habitat

I rarely see him awake and if I put fruit or veg in the cage he pops out, grabs it and goes straight back.

Maybe a couple of times a week he shows an interest in coming out.

It makes me sad that I don't see him as much but I guess he's doing what he wants.

Bailey is a beautiful hamster. Most of them are shy at the beginning and become more confident as they settle into their homes.

Thanks for all your replies and advice. It's nice to see so many cute hamsters in your profiles. I'll definitely be trying the toilet roll trick tomorrow.

I stayed up late this evening hoping to see her. I felt a bit silly whispering to the entrance of a burrow for ages, but it was a big success. Bailey slowly came out to explore her cage while I was talking to her and seemed comfortable with me being there for the first time.

She then got quite inquisitive and came up to the bars to sniff. I offered her a treat, which she devoured, and then she couldn't stay away from me! I had to turn the light out and leave because she was climbing the bars in excitement..

It seems yogurt drops might be Bailey's favourite!
