Question Hamster who likes to skydive

My hamster, Flossy, has a tendency to take a leap into space when in my hands, which makes handling her a bit unsafe. Has anyone else experienced this with hamsters before? Is this normal?

Yes, that's normal and you need to be aware of that. You can always take her out of her cage in a hamster taxi like a mug or jug while putting your hand over it then go to a safe place low down with her.
Sit on the floor inside a play pen or a hamster proof room to handle and play with her.
Hamsters are fast and unpredictable. They also have a reckless streak and will jump without considering the consequences.
I caught one of my hamsters mid air once, just, when he jumped off my arm simply because he wanted to. He wasn't scared or startled or anything like that. I have even transpoted him in a handbag before which was the nearest available thing when he became very wriggly and excited before a free roaming session.

Ok thanks. It's just a pity I can't get her to sit in my hand!

Why is it a pity? You could have her in your lap, just put some seeds on your hand in your lap and she'll soon sit in it to eat but watch out when she's finished she'll be keen to explore again .

I wish! Any food I give her goes straight into her pouches, to be eaten when she gets back to her nest.

Haha! Yes, that's what hamsters do. They like to eat in their nests and have a big hoard within reach.

Not all of them want to sit on a hand, mine certainly don't and we have to accept their likes and dislikes, same as with humans. Hamsters are lovely little creatures with minds of their own so you may have to adjust to Flossy's ways, lol.

In the year and a half that I have had my Syrian, only TWICE has she willingly sat in my hand for several minutes. Both times I held her in one hand with my other hand slightly cupped over her, and she let me stroke her back or the top of her head. The first time I did that she actually closed her eyes, so I paused and I swear I didn’t even dare breathe, it was so heavenly! But 99 percent of the time she’s anxious to get down and do some exploring or running or burrowing or whatever. I just try to enjoy that fact that she never bites me and seems comfortable with me picking her up, even though she so rarely wants to just relax in my hand. The very few times she does, it’s just that much more special.
