Can Hamsters go off their food?
Hi guys, just wondering, can hamsters go off their food as in, they don't like it anymore? Just lately my hamster won't stop chewing his bars. We get him in his playpen we have, and he chews them bars as well, we try him in his ball, sometimes he runs for a bit then starts chewing his hiw ball so i don't think it's boredom. I've noticed he isn't eating as much, if any of his food lately, but he'll eat his treats as soon as we give him them. He chews at one specific place in his cage, so I've tried to block it off by hanging one of those wooden ramps there, but he goes crazy on the wood, chewing and dragging it out of the way to get behind it to chew the bars. We used to give him Hamster Muesli but slowly changed it to the harry hamster mix, which he seemed to eat and enjoy for a while. Any other suggestions what it could be? TIA

Re: Can Hamsters go off their food?
Does he have enough chew toys, and of different varieties? Have you checked his teeth? If he's chewing at everything, and not eating, maybe there's something wrong with them?
Also - what size is his cage? If his cage is too small, he might exhibit boredom/bar chewing even when outside it.

Re: Can Hamsters go off their food?
He's got 4 chew toys in his cage at the moment, all of different shapes and sizes, plus we give him some when he's in his pen but he only chews his bars. He's also got a block which is supposed to be good for them to chew, plus his wooden house which i've heard him munching on now and again. I checked his teeth a couple week back and they seemedfine, ill check again later when he's up.
It's the Hamster heaven cage which is the minimum size for Syrians according to what i've researched. He has 6 inch of bedding to dig into the base of the cage. I scatter his food as well and hide treats under toys and his bedding etc which he finds and eats pretty quick. He seems to eat food that's scattered around his cage but not in his bowl. He does poo a lot near his food bowl but i've heard this is normal so can't be the reason why he's not touching his bowl?
