Unhappy Hamster missing... need advice

SO

My hamster escaped from her cage (by somehow completely destroying some 6mm rodent proof mesh - I think my finding a week spot and ripping). At first I wasn't too worried - she escaped before for a day then we were woken up at 1am (after a lot of crying on my part) by her walking back to her cage and just sitting by it lol waiting to be put back in.
We also, the last time she escaped, could hear her in the walls, so we had reassurance she was alive etc.

But this time, she's been missing since Friday (when we noticed she was gone, but think she must have escaped thursday). And we haven't heard ANYTHING anywhere in the house for those days. We've put counted food and water in a lot of spots she could have gone but none has been taken. I've found some rodent poo in some places (behind the boiler), but again, no food or water taken from there. We're relatively new to the house itself, so I'm also not necessarily convinced these are hers and not, say, an old mice problem (some of the droppings were really crumbly and under a a lot of dust).

Because she got through the mesh I'm also really worried she injured herself doing it. That and the fact no bait has been taken from anywhere, plus no sound whatsoever, is scaring me she's not ok to be honest. Particularly as it's been a few of my friends bdays this weekend, so have got back to the house at odd times in the night and still not heard anything. Last time when she was missing for a day she came back quite dehydrated (you could tell by her eyes), and drunk a LOT of water, so am worried that there's not much she could be drinking. On the flip side, our plumbing is a bit of a nightmare and keeps flooding atm, so she could be for now drinking horrrible sewage water - which isn't a much more comforting thought...

Even if she is ok I'm at a bit of a loss about how to get her back now. She's not taking any bait so not 100% where she could be exactly, and we've put up a few bucket traps with no interest whatsoever. We've put out hides and her wheel that she loves with food in too, to see if the smell of her 'stuff' attracted her, and even a small bit of her nesting bedding to see if she'd take any of that for wherever she is now.

Does anyone have any advice? And also a reasonable time to keep looking for if we're getting no sort of sign? That may sound very callous, I am really upset by this!!! but I also can't go on for weeks hoping she's still alive if it's likely she isn't.

There was a thread here not long ago about someone who found their missing hamster in a neighbor’s house. Maybe ask your neighbors ?

That happened with me too recently. My hamster escaped on the 20th, maybe even the evening of the 19th and I found her under the stove (well, to be more accurate, the cat found her - she was uninjured though; the cat was just sniffing her) on the 23th. I say keep looking and putting out food and water! Maybe fill up some plastic tubs with bedding and food and water? That's what the vet told me to do.

Thanks for the advice! Tried the tubs and moved a bucket trap to the kitchen in case she was there and put some water there too. No luck I just can't seem to hear or find any evidence of her, it's really upsetting!

They can get anywhere, have you checked to see if she could be in the walls or under the floorboards? I recently found mine after she had been lost for 3 days in the exit pipe from our dryer. we still have no idea how she got there. Don't give up, hamsters are very resilient and can survive for a long time without food or water.

I've checked everywhere I physically can without pulling things apart. I rent, so don't really want to do that when I have NO idea where in the house she could be - if I knew, for instance, she'd been in the kitchen area (ie heard here, or she'd taken some of the food from there), then I'd start trying to get here out. It's been a week now and we've heard no sign of her anywhere we've left counted food out n water all over and none of it has been touch, plus have heard no sounds even when staying up late in different rooms quietly etc

I'm starting to really loose home and am quite upset about it !

If it has been that long and you still haven't seen any sign of her then maybe you'll have to accept that you won't be able to find her .

She could be anywhere and even if you would literally rip your house apart you still might not find her - she could have gotten outside days ago.

Yeah that's what i'm leaning towards now... You see a lot of stories of them being found after a while, but normally those include people having found signs along the way!! In a way, part of me wishes she had died, because at least I could have some security of knowing to grieve... it's the not knowing that's the worst!

I'd love to rescue another hamster, or maybe a few mice, as have a great detolf with lots of stuff so could make a great home (though might not go for a syrian again, just as I'd be worried about what great escapists they are!), but I have such a fear of as soon as I find a new one to bring home, her just turning up!

Give it a month or so first before you get another pet, just so that you can get used to the fact that she is probably gone.

Have you look into clothes pockets? I had a neighbor once that found its hamster after months (still alive) in a suit pocket.
