Re: Fitch bedding vs Kaytee C&C vs Carefresh white?
I needed this thread as I've used carefresh and it was very dusty and had a horrible smell to it. I'm currently using kiln dried woodshavings...I know naughty me but it got basically no odour and isn't dusty compared to carefresh batches I've had it's the lesser of the two evils. Was thinking of trying kaytee but heard somewhere about chemicals being used that harm both humans and hamsters. Domt know details on it like but that's the only thing that put me off. Fitch has been highly recommended but personally never used it as it comes in huge bags and I don't have a huge cage to put it in, mine holds about 60l so idk where I'd store the bags

I’ve tried both Kaytee clean & cozy white and Carefresh white, and also Carefresh natural. Carefresh natural is a big no no, smells weird even exposed for long time and very very dusty. Carefresh white slightly dusty but was ok. Prefer Kaytee white and it’s soft, it just often moves everywhere as my robo loves burrowing and it’s very light bedding, it expands and compressed very very easily. But it’s fine for me as long as my robo is healthy and happy. Did consider Fitch but still finishing my bag of Kaytee for now. Whenever I used Carefresh as emergency from pets at home, I put a small portion of Kaytee as nesting material and Yoyo loves to stuff Kaytee in his house, so I assume he like Kaytee more.

Re: Fitch bedding vs Kaytee C&C vs Carefresh white?
Well I've been and got some c&c natural (they didn't have white) don't mind the colour to be honest as I'm going for a natural theme. Checked the back and there's no health warning on it so maybe it's just the old batches or US ones? Will post a review here when I start to use it

I dont mind the colour, it's just the smell is so strong, plus the dust, it makes me sneezed all the way long while cleaning his cage. Imagine i am a hamster so tiny living right in there with the bedding. Omg i can't survive haha. Im not trying to offend or say anyone is wrong, just trying to clarify my experience with the carefresh natural (the huge bag i bought when carefresh white and kaytee is out of stock) if you want to do something easy, maybe you can try like erinsanimals. use a old pillow cage, put some crumbled white paper into the pillow case, maybe tear into big pieces makes you need not to break down the chunk later on, tie up the pillow case and put into washing machine and tumble dryer, same concept as forgetting to take out tissues or paper from your pockets which doing laundry. You might feel it safer for your lovelies since you make them yourself and see the proccess.

I haven't seen that video but have been binge watching them recently. RIP Nitrogen
Carefresh naturals is nasty and will never use it again. I've bought kaytee clean and cosy natural so hopefully it won't be too bad in comparison. I'll definitely give the pillow case method a go though!

Carefresh was making my hamsters sneeze! It's so dusty.

One of my hamsters was fine with carefresh, the other one had a reaction to it, her eyes closed up and got all swollen/puffy - i will never use carefresh again. I agree with you, I think it was the dust that caused it.

Re: Fitch bedding vs Kaytee C&C vs Carefresh white?
I use Kaytee but I find a strange difference between natural and colour bedding. The natural is more paper like in texture and the coloured bedding is like tissue paper. Maybe that’s why it’s called “natural”

Re: Fitch bedding vs Kaytee C&C vs Carefresh white?
I've tried a few different ones, and kaytee must by my favourite now. It's sooo fluffy.
Megazorb was good, but both me and my mum got a bad batch and irritated hamsters eyes.
Care fresh is ok and I find it better for odour control, and hold burrows better but can be rough feeling.
Sometimes I mix both to add a bit of colour and hold the burrows up.

Re: Fitch bedding vs Kaytee C&C vs Carefresh white?
Kaytee is brilliant at holding up burrows and hoarding/nest chambers; my previous little Syrian girl, Maisie, loved C&C over Fitch, aspen, litter and Carefresh, as does Wintergreen!
I do tend to use some back2nature litter for the wheel area to give it stability and discourage undermining (it's a Karlie Wonderland wheel, and its weight on top of tunnels has caused some issues with subsidence and resulted in an annoyed hamster not being able to run in a lop-sided wheel!!). Litter also gives another substrate texture.
I do use green coloured Carefresh for decorating Wintergreen's woodland-themed setup, but otherwise, in my opinion, it's not worth the higher price tag. I'd choose Kaytee C&C as a main substrate anyday.
