Default When you insist to mummy and daddy you aren't sleepy....

When our hamster insists to us that she isn't sleepy even though it is well past her bedtime...: https://kapwi.ng/c/ADL0TmeT

My hamster loves sitting on her hind legs and usually starts nodding off, then jerks up straight just before she completely slumps to one side. She does it repetitively all the time. There are times where she is very deep sleep so she slumps down till she is completely belly up and stays there fast asleep.

Just thought I'd like to share this because I found it really cute. Of course there are times where she curls up to sleep like a "normal" hamster, but sometimes she just keeps trying to stay awake and this happens.

Her name is Kimi. Nowadays she has taken to sitting on her hindlegs on her wheel and dozing off there. She ends up pooping and storing a lot of her seeds on the wheel, and I imagine it gets really uncomfortable for her little feet when she wants to run on her wheel as she will be running in her poop/ seeds.

Any idea if it would be necessary to discourage the habit of storing seeds on the wheel, and how I should go about discouraging it, if necessary? She has plenty of hideouts but somehow likes sleeping on the wheel the most.

I think she's a hammock type of hamster, really. She seems to like the feeling of bobbing around on her wheel. I'm in the middle of planning how to set up a non-fabric based hammock/ swing for her.

Have you thought of one of the plastic sputniks for her?

I literally had no idea what was a sputnik! I've googled and it looks amazing. I'll have to check the pet stores to see if they have one, I do think Kimi is the type that would like it, given her fondness for bobbing on her wheel.

Also, she seems to have gotten out of the habit of storing all her seeds on the wheel very quickly, although she still enjoys sleeping there/ bobbing herself gently left and right on it. I tipped out the seeds for her at first but I felt bad destroying her hoard and left it in for two days - and she demolished the hoard herself after that. Perhaps she realised they hurt her feet when she runs on them! These little hamsters are just so smart and adorable.

You can make a swinging bed from an egg box.

Use the top part, make holes in the corners, feed rope through them and tie from the roof at required height. You can put tissue strips or hay etc in it first.

It's such an interesting journey to find out what your hamster likes and then adjust their home to their preferences.

One of mine doesn't burrow but likes to be above ground. Took me a while to figure out but its so rewarding when i find him sitting on the highest shelf like i did this morning.
This particular shelf leads to a suspended wicker tunnel and suspension bridge right across his cage. He can get on and off on either side.

I never took anything out without replacing it with something else while i tried to work out what he wanted. Once i got it so very wrong and boy, did he let me know!

Thanks for the egg box idea, now there are so many options for me to try out with her! Yes, it's so interesting to learn about their preferences. I have another Robo and I made her a swing out of cardboard and paper rope, as well as a plastic hammock but she didn't really use them and after several days, nibbled the ropes till they broke. So I removed them.

I think Kimi might like them though, I sure hope so. Like you said, it is so rewarding when you manage to give them something they really like.

Also, I placed my Robos in separate bin cages stacked on top of each other (sides fully meshed for ventilation). I suddenly realised that they like sleeping in the exact same spot as the other. For example, Kimi would curl up in her house at the top right corner of her bin cage, and the one at the the bottom would curl up in her top right corner as well, even if that corner is just substrate. Both of them keep taking turns mirroring the other's sleeping positions, so that either one of them usually ends up sleeping in a strange place, as their set up is not identical.

I wonder if that means they find comfort in the presence of each other? They are just such adorable creatures.

Their set up and toys are not identical because like Ria said, they have different preferences and I had to make adjustments for them. The other one doesn't nod off to sleep and tip sideways like Kimi, instead, her weird specialty is climbing to the very top of her wheel and squishing herself between the back of the wheel and the mesh to sleep there, dangling in midair
