I still have the large panel playpen but Percy doesn't do too well in open spaces. He has some mental health issues i think. He can't fathom the flying saucer either and always avoided it in the big playpen. Today he stepped on it and promptly fell off, then wouldn't go near it again.

Haha you could be describing my little ones! We have a playpen about 1.2m x 1.2m with a flying saucer, a wheel, some tunnels, a hide, a seesaw and some rubber balls in it. We call it Crazy Fun Land. Monty is terrified of open spaces so she just finds a corner and huddles up while Nanuk tends to dart around like a missile but not actually play with anything except the seesaw. He tries to scale the walls too. Wr haven't put Norman or Rollo into the playpen yet.
I think Monty's fear of the open came after she was out in the playpen one evening and we had a nature documentary playing in the next room on tv. All of a sudden, and quite loudly, an eagle called which was audible in the hamster room and she immediately froze completely. My wife and I were both shocked because we thought she had suffered a heart attack- she went completely still and totally unresponsive. We picked her up and held her for a bit then put her back into her cage and after a few minutes she was back to normal but I do think the experience traumatised her because ever since then she has been very wary of the playpen.
None of mine can fathom the flying saucer either so don't worry, Percy is not alone.

Re: Percy
Update on Percy: He's attempted a couple of rounds on the flying saucer but hasn't sussed out the getting off it bit yet. He simply lets himself fall off.
He seems to see the playpen bin as a second home since i've installed a water bottle and started to hide some treats for him. He was never so content in the larger panel playpen and kept jumping up the panels or scratch about in his mug taxi after a short while of being in there.
He even started a hoard in a cardboard tube in the playpen bin and doesn't ask to come out for ages.
His diabetes doesn't seem to bother him but i keep a close eye on him.
He's still on a mission to bite my fingers any chance he gets resulting in me getting bitten every time i check whether he's changed his mind about this or not.
His mind is set it seems but easy to forget because he is such a cute looking little hamster.
All in all i'm happy with the way he's settled in. He doesn't seem so angry now and goes about his hamster business with zest.

Re: Percy
Had to share this photo of Percy playing in his playpen bin. He looks so contented now considering that he was a very stressed, frantic and angry hamster when we first adopted him. I can't thank this forum enough for all the advice and encouragement i've been given and this little hamster is proof of what this forum is all about.

He is absolutely gorgeous. And I completely agree with what you said RiaP. This forum is an absolute wealth of information and knowledge. It has helped me be a better parent to my hamsters and for that I am very very grateful.

Re: Percy
Percy is adorable, I can see how you can easily forget the biting when he's just so cute! Good to hear how well he's doing.
