Re: Percy
I found a use for the weird plastic cat and shelf from Henry's Alaska cage.
I cut a section of the shelf and attached it to Percy's bin so now he has a little platform with a ramp and the cat underneath.
The other morning my OH said: i just saw eyes looking out from the cat's eyes.
Percy likes to sit in the cat. Never thought i could get "creative" with plastic.

Re: Percy
Today i wanted to know if Percy still bites or not so i put my hand flat into his play pen with a pumpkin seed on my fingers.
Percy run towards my hand, bit my finger then took off with the seed - little devil.
He wasn't scared, threatened or angry so why does he bite i ask myself.
Maybe he hates hands but he takes mealworms from my fingers or maybe he is very territorial about his cage and play pen or maybe he bites because he likes to? I have absolutely no idea but would love to know how this little dwarf ticks.
When he is in his play pen and i hold my fingers above his nose ( just out of reach!) he will follow them around and i need to pluck up the courage to try and find out why he follows them....think i know the answer though.

Re: Percy
Congratulations on Percy, some hams take longer to settle and adjust, I also agree about having a cage with the door at the front instead of the top.

Re: Percy
Does he bite to the point it hurts? Or just nibble? Nibbles can be friendly...

Nah, drawing blood is not a friendly nibble. It didn't hurt as such, nothing like a bite from a Syrian but Percy seems to be out to get me or my fingers anyway, lol.
He's a strange little hamster. I just can't figure him out.

Re: Percy
Oh no, that's not good. Good job he's only a little one. He seems to have come a long way though. With a bit more time I'm sure he will get there.

Re: Percy
Percy used to have a food bowl and jumped into it every time he ate from it so i got him a hamster hide mushroom. He loves it and sits in there munching away for ages. He won't even come out when he wants a drink but twists his head to get to the bottle then goes back in to scrunch some more seeds.

Re: Percy
Some more photos of Percy. He likes running around in his play pen and playing with the wooden things i had to remove from his bin cage. The box has four holes and he likes to sit in there washing and nibbling on the hay. I also give him little tasks to figure out. Today i put some seeds on top of the oil burner which he tried to reach but couldn't so i moved it next to a bridge. He quickly run onto the bridge and hopped on the oil burner to get the seeds.
Funny thing is, even though he's the one that bites and won't let me handle him, he's the one i most interact with.
Hamsters aren't all about stroking, cuddling etc and the ones who don't want physical contact with humans can be just as joyful and fun to have around.
Percy communicates quite well and lets me know when he wants out of his cage and when he wants back in.

Re: Percy
I'm using the Xmas tree bin cage as a play pen for Percy.
I've decided to keep it as a spare cage just in case i ever come across a really desperate dwarf, not that i'm looking to get a fourth hamster.
The silent spinner now has star car stickers on the gaps. Thanks Serendipity for the tip. Why have i never thought of that.
This forum is an oasis in the dessert of my limited hamster knowledge.

Re: Percy
Percy is gorgeous!
It's a very good idea to have a spare cage just in case it is needed.
Looks like a really nice playpen!
