Re: Henry and Gordon
Is it my imagination or do hamsters have facial expressions?
At 21.00 today, i put Henry's supply of fresh food in his dish and he came out to check it out.
Henry went straight for the piece of pear from our pear tree and ate some then pouched the rest while i chatted to him.
I sat down next to him and started to eat the rest of the pear.
Well, Henry stopped what he was doing (pouching cucumber), his head shot round and he stared at me, gave me that look as if to say "why are you eating my food".
He then trotted off back to his house.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Henry and Gordon and then there was three!
I decided to keep my DIY project of a bin cage and another homeless hamster moved in. The shop girl guessed Percy's age to be around five months and he's from the same adoption section of the p@h Gordon's from. He's also been in the shop for a while. Percy has a very cute face and he had me soon as he looked at me.
Percy rolls around in the sand so needs a bigger sand bath because the sand ended up in my ironing basket. I'll let him settle in and watch him for a while to find out what he likes and wants then review his minimum size bin. A Samla is always an upgrade option and another DIY project for me.
I have made another bin and purposely made it look girlie so i won't be tempted to keep it because i don't do pink and girlie.
Percy was labelled as a Russian dwarf, looks quite chunky and lives upstairs in the bike room/Henry's free roaming room because the lounge has been taken over by two hamsters and there's no more room.
I can't believe i have three hamsters! How did this happen? I started off with one and then became totally hooked on these little creatures.
Here's a couple of pics of Percy and the other bin i made.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Haha, Ria, you said in a previous post that your husband said you would put another hamster in the bin cage instead of selling it. It's a nice bin cage. I like the flowery border around the mesh and I can see why adorable Percy was hard to resist. It is going to be fun to have all three hamsters in your life!
Regarding your question about hamsters having facial expressions, I have wondered it, too, although I realize it may be my thoughts about what he is thinking during specific activities.
Enjoy your three hamsketeers!

Re: Henry and Gordon
Oh I love it when they finally realise your presence is a good thing. You spend ages trying to convince them, then as soon as the penny drops the rest of taming and training just falls into place. He looks so cute eating breakfast. Adorable little Henry.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Huh! He's a feisty one! Percy is a burrower so i decided to up the substrate while he's underground at other side of bin. Oh no, he was out to investigate so i was quick while he run around and then he threw himself at the back of my hand!
I quickly put the new, bigger sand pit in (cardboard is my new best friend) and offered him a sunflower seed between my fingers. He sniffed, snatched it from my fingers and then "boxed" my fingers with his little paws. So i got another which he also snatched.
Must go and get some pebbles, gnaw sticks and bake some pear tree.

Bake some pear tree...? I’m intrigued. What is that, I wonder?
Sounds like it must be lots of fun in your household these days. Enjoy!

I have a pear tree in my garden and brake off twigs then bake them at 100C for about an hour to kill off bugs. I put them in my hamsters habitats to nibble on.
Percy is fat. Must be that muesli they fed him at the pet shop. He's on the Rodipet junior dwarf mix now.
He's not tame. I gently stroked him this morning and he jumped a little but it didn't put him off his food because he continued eating!
I put my hand in and he nibbled it, probably checking if i'm edible then went back to nibble his whimzee.
Hmm, the way to Percy is food but i don't want him to get even fatter, he's territorial and seems ok to be out in the open (he doesn't dive for shelter). Three things i've learned about him. I think i need to get him into a mug (should be easy with a sunflower seed), maybe Monday, set up the playpen with toys and me in it but no food (keep some within reach in case he panics and thinks there's a famine) then see what happens.
Henry is tame on his terms and Gordon....Gordon is a bit of a ghost hamster who burrows deep down, gets up after midnight and goes to sleep around 06.00/06.30 which makes attempts of taming difficult. He has put his paws on my fingers to lick off linseeds which is progress but i haven't taken him out of his tank because i don't want to chase and scare him. He may be a hamster to watch only but that's fine too, makes me happy to see his cute little face. I go along with whatever he's comfortable with but will continue to put my hand in his tank with seeds on it.
That pear tree answer turned into an update on my Trio.
Must go now and buy a flying saucer .....

Re: Henry and Gordon
Percy looks so cute! It’s fab news he’s come to live with you and have the life he deserves. It is interesting how different they all are and what big personalities the have even though they are so small. It’s no wonder we love them so much! X
