Re: Henry and Gordon
I have just moved Henry's cage away from the big window which has vertical blinds and thermal curtains but still feels a bit drafty.
A cardboard tip i wanted to share: I bought two sheets of thin cardboard sheets from The Range, cut them into size and attached to his cage with old curtain clips.
The one on the left is permanent to stop him from eating the houseplant, the one opposite acts like a flap and there are two on separate clips on the back. One to keep drafts out and one to use on the top if needed.
Saves fluffing around with a blanket and also keeps the sun out in the summer.
Some people in this household reckon that i'm a bit paranoid and over protective when it comes to the hamsters but i want them to be comfortable. So there.

Re: Henry and Gordon
This afternoon i heard a cluttering noise coming from Gordon's tank. It's very unusual for him to be out during the day. He was busy trying to move a whimzee down into his den and being so small he had to make a real effort but managed in the end.
Last night he made me laugh. He over balanced while washing and ended up on his back with his paws up in the air!
And he sat in my hand for the first time, after a great deal of sniffing and ate linseeds. Soon as they were gone he hopped off but i'm well happy to have a bit more contact with this little cutie.
That's him this afternoon.

Re: Henry and Gordon
HARRY HAMSTER VS RODIPET - put to the test by a hamster
Henry only eats what he likes and won't touch anything he doesn't like, he'd rather go without.
I've put two food bowls in his habitat, one with Harry Hamster and one with Rodipet Syrian hamster mix. I have heard many human opinions on food mixes and now i want to hear a hamster's.
This morning Henry came out of his house to see us humans and let us stroke him!! This was so out of character for our self contained and somewhat unsociable hamster that i'm still reeling from the shock of it all.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Lovely that Henry came out! Maybe he is adjusting. Interesting about the Harry Hamster vs Rodipet. I reckon they take all the Harry Hamster but are more picky with the Rodipet. Hamsters may vary of course but our first Syrian loved HH and always emptied his bowl apart from the brown pellets. Newt left loads of the Rodipet - mainly the little itty bits. They do seem to like the bigger pieces in HH.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Yes, that's the exact outcome.
The HH bowl is empty and the Rodipet bowl has the small bits left.
Harry Hamster is the winner for Syrians!
Robo Gordon loves the Rodipet dwarf mix and leaves the HH big bits so he's on Rodipet only now and Percy dwarf loves the new Rodipet Hybrid mix. It smells lovely and a bit herby. I sit there sniffing his food jar like a hamster....
I stroked Henry while he was out foraging this morning hoping for a repeat of yesterday morning but Henry shook me off then trotted back to his house!! Things have to be on his terms. That's my Henry.
He came back out alright when my OH called him to serve him his porridge.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Hamsters!
For months Henry has peed in his Rodipet corner toilets and he has two. A small one in his house and a big one in the corner opposite. So why has he changed his mind. Nothing i've done.
The small one in his house he now uses as a food store, the big one in the cage has been made redundant and the sand pit he now uses as his toilet! But why?
Is he preparing for the winter by hoarding even more food into his house? He has already insulated his house with walls of substrate and shovelled more substrate into his coconut outhouse. His coat is thicker too and the bald patches around his scent glands are disappearing.
I wouldn't call this house a cold one but instinct seems to be taking over and he's a hamster who likes his comforts.

Re: Henry and Gordon
Today was the first time i've cleaned Gordon's tank and he's been with us over three months now. He was ever so good about it and dug around in the transport box. I had to put him in the other room though to keep him calm.
Looks like he's glad to be back home.
