I really enjoy the correspondence between Mistress Poppy and Master Henry. The world from the view of a hamster is enormously funny — and totally delightful!

Gordon has a Kaytee silent spinner because i couldn't find the wheel i wanted at the time. It looks nice in his tank because its red but that's not the point, he keeps falling out!

Today i got the one i wanted. Henry has the large version of this wheel and i'd recommend it. It runs very smoothly and quietly, has no gaps where tiny paws could get stuck and is plastic so i can wet wipe it. It has a fairly wide running surface so hopefully, excitable wee Gordon will stop doing his sumersaults. Its an unknown brand hence have included a photo. I can feel yet another very late night coming on....

That's an interesting find Ria. The plastic wheel bit makes me think of the savic rolly but with a different middle bit.

Yes, the big wheel is not unlike the Savic but not as heavy and has the option of using the solid stand or can be attached to the bars.

I had to enlargen the area of Gordon's sandpit to accommodate the stand of the new wheel. Gordon does some kind of circuit training. He runs two or three laps around the wheel then jumps on the wheel for a few rounds then back to a few laps running on sand then back on the wheel etc hence had to increase the sand area so he can run his rounds.

Can't wait to see how he reacts to the new wheel and hope that he doesn't turn his nose up to it....roll on midnight.

Update on Gordon and taming:

First of all, i'm not 100% sure if its at all possible to tame a Robo because they're so fast and buzz around but please correct me if i'm wrong because i'd love to hear from other Robo friends/owner's experiences.

I put my hand in Gordon's tank with a seed on my fingertips and keep still so he gets used to my scent and do this two or three times a week. Not for long, just a few minutes. He no longer runs away and just carries on with whatever he's doing, usually wheeling or washing. Couple of nights ago he approached my fingers sniffing and came to within an inch but wasn't brave enough to get the seed which i left for him when i removed my hand. This morning he run behind my hand via a bridge and sniffed the back of my hand which i think is definitely progress.

I'm inclined to carry on like that until he hopefully takes the seed from my hand then take it from there or should i take him out in a mug which would mean that i would have to chase and catch him for bathtub taming?

Syrians are so much easier to tame than dwarves i think because they are so much bigger and slower hence easier to pick up.

Talking of Syrians. My OH spoils our Henry. I put Henry's eggcup in upright a bit away from his house so he has to come out to eat his porridge but my OH puts it in sideways right by the door so Henry can eat it from inside his house!

Here's today's photo of Henry looking very smug because breakfast was served by his mate.

Hi Ria,

That sounds like progress with taming little Gordon. It is possible to tame them, although it may take a while. As I said in my previous thread about Finnegan, I had him since March and he sat in my hand for the first time after five months of just running across my hand. I wasn't keen on chasing him around to catch him in my hands so I didn't go that route. It must be frightening for them and I was ok with doing it on his terms.

That said, there is a Pet Expo this weekend and those Robos are totally tamed. I asked the woman how she did it and she said she handled them since they were babies. I like the gentle do-it-on-their-own-terms approach, but there are advantages to having them tamed, such as when they need veterinary care, medication, etc.

Your Henry is adorable!

Thanks Cotton, yes, i don't want to frighten Gordon by chasing him. I caught him once in a mug for a quick health check but didn't feel comfortable with it because he was so scared that he peed in my hand.

He's not that nervous now and seems fine with noises and lights etc, just carries on with his hamster stuff. I suppose he's used to it from spending his whole live in a petshop.

Linseeds may eventually win him over. He loves those. So instead of putting some on a log i'll put some on my fingers and see what happens.
