Sorry to hear you’ve been having so much trouble with the vets Ria, that referral price seems crazy & totally unfair to me & I don’t really understand the approach either have been taking tbh, I hope you have better luck with the third vet.

I just wanted to pitch in and share about my Nan’s UTI (human nan) she had reoccurring UTIs for years - like 5!) until they actually established the actual bacteria involved and prescribed the correct antibiotic for the particular strain of bacteria- is this something the vet has done already or have they just plumped for a broad spectrum one and hoped for the best? She has not had one since and that was about 3 years ago - she is also in her twilight years x

Saw a different vet in the same surgery today who was in fact very good and knowledgable about hamsters.

The prognosis for Henry isn't good and he's losing weight rapidly. He's tired and feels light and bony and dropped down to 160g. I think the end isn't far away.

The vet strongly suspects a bladder stone and what he said made perfect sense. It could be a tumor but he said they feel differently to the touch and a scan would give a more accurate diagnosis but not change the outcome so there's little point.
There are three options: a) surgery which may be successful providing its a stone and Henry would survive the aneasthetic which is questionable in a hamster of his age
b) keep him as comfortable as possible with Metacam
c) refer him to an exotics hospital who may be able to try a stone disolving diet or surgery of course.
I wouldn't put him through surgery at his age and he's already too weak, lost far too much weight in a short time.
A diet wouldn't work because Henry only eats what Henry wants to eat. It would only cause him stress.

So its the Metacam to keep him as comfortable as possible. If at any point i believe that he is suffering i will have him helped along his way without hesitation.

He's here and asleep in his nest but i already feel incredibly sad knowing that he will leave us soon.

These little hamsters really capture our hearts, don't they?

Sorry to hear about Henry Ria. They sure do capture our hearts. Glad you found a vet that helped you with options. When Star got to this point I just made her as comfortable as possible and let her eat all the treats she loved Spoil him rotten Ria.

I’m really sorry to hear this Ria, they really do capture our hearts & it is hard when we have to make these kind of decisions for them but I’m sure you’re doing the right thing for him & I hope he can remain comfortable & peaceful at home with you.

Thank you all.

Now i'm wondering how to spoil an already spoilt hamster!
I'll start with baking hamster friendly biscuits tonight.

I'm so sorry to hear about Henry. I would agree that it's best to spoil him for what time he has left than to stress him out with surgeries and diets, at his age.

Until about a week ago i very rarely saw Henry drink.

Of lately he has been coming out of his house to drink, even during the day and for the first time ever i've noticed the water level in his bottle going down.

Is that a sign of his kidneys starting to fail or could it be a side effect of the Metacam?

It makes no difference either way, i'm just curious.

Could be either Ria, I think the metacam is not good for the kidneys (or the liver) so if either of those were already failing being on metacam is possibly not going to help the function of the organs. But, at Henry's age you have to weigh up the quality of life v quantity of life. i.e. it is better to be out of pain but it may shorten his life a little bit (most of this is guess work though, so I'm not sure 'people' know 100%!!
