Ok thanks. Do you feed it as a supplement food or to replace a food mix? Henry eats the Harry Hamster.

I gave it to Star mushed up alongside her harry hamster mix. I did mush up the pellets from the HH mix but towards the end she had stopped eating that. She wolfed down the mushed up science selective. With Twinkle I have added it to his HH mix as he never ate the pellets, he wolfs his down too. That is a round about way of saying I wouldn't just give them the science selective on it's own.

Sorry to hear about Henry’s weight loss Ria, it could be partly age & he may have lost his appetite a bit, science selective is always worth a try, hope he’ll enjoy some of that. You could try offering a bit more of the higher fat extras like little pieces of nut too & see if he’ll eat those.
I would give some probiotics too, it can be a bit tricky giving them while they’re on antibiotics as they have to be given a few hours apart at least & need to be given on food not in water.
If that would be a bit difficult then you could just wait until he finishes the antibiotics.
I use Ddr S potent brew for mine but Pro-C is easily available in most pet shops if you want to try that.

Thank you both for your advice. He won't eat the science selective mashed but he eats it when scattered about.
I haven't seen any blood since yesterday and he has two more lots of Baytril to take.
Could it be the Metacam that made him feel so sleepy and lose his appetite?
I thought i noticed a connection and haven't given it to him today. He has started to eat and hoard again.

Last night i told my OH that i'm thinking of lowering the shelves and taking down the suspended tunnel and bridge because Henry is getting old and frail now.
Henry came out of his coconut, jumped on top of his house, climbed into his hay basket, out the other side and onto the bridge, walked along it and down onto a bendy bridge.
I know it was a co-incident but the timing couldn't have been more perfect. Point taken Henry, i will leave your home alone.

It could the metacam making him sleepy & could possibly be a factor in his loss of appetite too. The good thing about metacam is you can just give it as & when it’s needed unlike a course that needs to be finished so if you think he’s ok without it then just stop & you can always give it again if you get the feeling he may be in any pain.
Good to hear he’s still enjoying his home as it is, he must have read your mind bless him!

It looks like Henry recovered from his recent illness. He asked to come out of his cage tonight and free roamed for a while. He's eating again and he's putting on weight. He's 192g now.
It was a very worrying time when Henry took ill and i want to thank you all again for all your advice and support.

I have only just caught up with this. So sorry Henry has been unwell but glad to hear he is improving. Has he finished the antibiotics now? They can start to lose weight with age and often it is toothache so they’re not eating the hard food. I started Moo on softened science selective (as an extra) when he was about 18 months and lost a lot of weight and he put it back on again. I still put his regular hamster mix out as well (they like to pouch it even if they don’t eat it!). I just put four pellets of the science selective on a baby food lid and add a tiny amount of boiled water so they soften then let it cool. He always eats it all! That way you know they’re getting all the nutrients. He also gets a bit of baby food most days which be really enjoys.

I had problems with the dosages of baytril and metacam once after the vet prescribed 0.03ml but showed me the 0.3ml marker on the syringe. That was the dose of dog Metacam for a Robo (the dose goes on their weight so clearly less than for a Syrian). But it does take some working out for a vet because the dog Metacam is stronger than the cat Metacam but it doesn’t just go on the weight of the animal. They also have to factor in the higher metabolism of a hamster. I honestly can’t remember the dose of Metacam for a Syrian but it worked out as approx two “drops” from the bottle - so that should give you an idea as to whether the amount was right!

I agree that a probiotic now would help a lot. The Dr S cypher mentioned is probably the best option. I used benebac as it is just the probiotic with no added vitamins as I didn’t want to use vitamin C (which pro C has). But it’s not that easy to get hold of - it’s from the US and a vet prescribed pro biotic in the US. I just added the dose to a bit of baby food and mixed it in. That way it gets eaten. The baytril can wreck their gut so the probiotic fir a couple of weeks really helps get things back to normal.

Amazon is selling it

I haven't found a baby food yet that he likes to put benebac in. What's an irresistable flavour? Have tried fruit, vegetables, chicken and combinations of those but no, Henry won't have it. He's always been selective with food and generally prefers crunchy to soft. He won't have the science selective soft but hoards it when i scatter some. Not sure how much and what exactly he eats, never have been with the exception of fresh veg. He eats sunflower seeds and gets extra to fatten him up a bit. I think he enjoys to crack the shell open to get to it.

I'll keep an eye on him, should the UTI flare up again then i'll order benefac rightaway. How long does it keep? What's the expiry date usually? Just wondering if i should order one just in case.
