Default Re: Hi new and would like some advice please

I'm excited for you and your son too, Franny! It's so great that you are able to provide the hamster with such a lovely Barney cage, I think it will be very happy with you.

Check if you are getting a male or a female, female Syrians are usually larger than males. A Syrian should need an 8 -12 inch wheel, the bigger the better. 8 inches is really for the smaller sized Syrians, or not fully grown ones.

You can absolutely use some of the plastic attachments to stick toys, provided they are safe enough. As Ria has mentioned, the tunnels probably aren't good to use because your Syrian might get stuck in them. There are also many types of hamster-safe toys that you can make for it.

Do watch videos and read up more on Syrian care and Syrian taming, you will be absolutely delighted once the Syrian has warmed up to you. Someone on this forum said something about how these hamsters are small creatures with big personalities and it's absolutely true. They may be small but they are lives and they deserve a good environment as much as any other living being. It is extremely rewarding to know that you and your son played a role in helping to save the life of a creature (by providing it with a safe, happy, and healthy environment), however small its size may be.

Please continue to update us, this is really exciting.
