Re: Mites infestation
And that's him just a month ago (although he still looked good very recently, I just don't have a good picture of that).

Re: Mites infestation
I can't really see anything on his back - maybe in the middle a bit. I can see what you mean round his face area and on his nose. Wait and see what others think. The bit on his nose almost looks like after bar chewing! But he doesn't have any bars does he?
They do lose fur behind the ears sometimes when getting older. He is adorable!

Re: Mites infestation
This is what Newt looked like last year when he was about 15 months old. Very hot summer last year and it was a moult. You can see his fur on his face thinned and the bald patches. It all grew back again (mind you I started giving him daily linseeds and his fur has been lovely ever since).

Re: Mites infestation
Thank you! And Newt is a cutie as well.
Pippin does chew on the mesh roof of his cage. I've tried many ways to dissuade him but, sadly, wasn't successful. He has never rubbed his fur off while doing that. But I know it's possible. But the other patches wouldn't be caused by that.
Although, Newt's moult does look similar to Pippin's patch on the side of his face and around the ear. Thank you for your replies and for sharing your experience. I'll keep an eye on Pippin (he has another check-up booked in two weeks). I'll also try giving him linseeds.

Re: Mites infestation
Just took a couple of pictures of Pippin's face close up. They're a bit blurry, he is always on the move

Re: Mites infestation
I use linseeds too. Just a pinch in the food bowl. Just make sure you buy brown linseeds and not golden linseeds. I buy a small bag in the cooking section of the supermarket where all the other nuts and dried fruits are.

[QUOTE=Coco61;924452 Just make sure you buy brown linseeds and not golden linseeds.[/QUOTE]
I've given Henry linseeds since Serendipity mentioned them in another thread but didn't know which ones to get so bought the brown ones my mother eats. Just as well. What's the difference between brown and golden linseeds? I sprinkle them on a shelf and they're always gone in the morning.

Re: Mites infestation
I can't remember the exact difference, but there was a nutritional difference between the brown and golden ones. I personally used brown linseeds(flax in the US, same thing) and they definitely don't hurt to add anyways, just a good pinch sprinkled somewhere seems to do the trick. My Syrian seemed to really enjoy them too, despite being such a small seed. I'd honestly consider them a must have supplement for hamsters!

Re: Mites infestation
As for Pippin - maybe just see how he goes and give him a daily pinch of brown linseeds! If he starts scratching excessively or anything gets worse, maybe take him to the vets, but I would ask for a skin scraping to be sure it's mites, if they suggest it might be next time.

Re: Mites infestation
Thank you all for your replies and suggestions! I've got some brown linseeds, both Pippin and Timmy seem to like them a lot So far, Pippin's fur doesn't seem improving (while Timmy is back at looking great). I'll ask for the skin scrape when we go back to the vets. Luckily, he doesn't seem that bothered by it and still acts as his usual self
