Default Russian dwarf diagnosed with tumor- scared of the unknown

Hello everyone,

I'm sure there are lots of people on this forum who have been through the same situation...yesterday I found a significantly large tumor on my approximately 2 year old little male Russian Dwarf hamster's flank...about the size of a small marble.

I handle him almost every day and had never noticed this before...it is well concealed under his fur. I took him to the specialist hamster vet straight away, the vet took a sample and upon analysis she said that it is definitely not an abscess or cyst, it is a tumor. She said that it contains 'suspicious round cells' so it is malignant and that, for a hamster of his age she would not consider operating.

He is still acting exactly as he always has, eating well and running a lot on his wheel at night though I think in the last week or two he has been sleeping a bit more.

Her only advice was to let it take its course and to bring him back to her if he starts to deteriorate significantly or seems to be in discomfort.

I realise that this is probably going to be how he meets his end and to be honest it breaks my heart. I have no idea how long he has until it takes him.

He is our second dwarf hamster ( hamster 1 is still alive and thriving thankfully!) and we got him from a pet shop where he had been abandoned by his previous owner whose cat had attacked him, taking his one eye out. He was in a really poor condition- very thin and scared- and over the 8 months we've had him, he's really improved. He has such a feisty but sweet character and absolutely loves his food and loves running. He's looking so much healthier now than when we first got him (ironically).

I've really bonded with him so much and can't bear the thought of him suffering.

The bottom line is that I've never lost a hamster and while I know that it is inevitable, I have no idea what to expect when the inevitable happens and he begins to get more ill. Apart from making him as comfortable as possible.

Is there anything I can give him for pain for example when he starts getting worse?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
