Default How often should I clean the cage out

Hello everyone, I know this has probably been covered many times but I am wondering how often I should be fully cleaning the cage out, I was doing it once a week but after reading a post yesterday about hamster getting stressed after cleaning I realised that Skye has been doing the same thing after my cleaning! I clean her nest out every day as she no.2’s in there a lot! And remove the old food but maybe I shouldn’t be doing that? She has a litter tray which I do every day too, should I be doing a full clean when the cage starts to smell!? Thanks

hi! yes, you definitely should not be doing a full clean every week! depending on the size of the cage, you can do it once a month or even longer than that. i usually spot clean once a week since i have a 665 sq in cage, which is where you just take out some of the bedding from their pee corner (or wherever the usually pee) and then replacing it. don't worry about their poo being in their nest, etc. it doesn't smell, and hamsters usually eat their poop!

how big is your cage? that would determine how often you should clean it.

Thank you for the helpful info! Yes will definitely leave her nest alone now for at least a few days as I hate disturbing it anyway and I’ll go for a once a month clean from now on as her cage is big enough, it’s approx 24 x 48”, not sure what’s that squared! that it never really smells that bad.

that's a plenty big cage (if that's in inches)! and you don't have to worry about cleaning the food out of their nest. it keeps pretty well, and if you ever do remove it make sure you replace it. if there is any fresh food that they haven't eaten (i.e. veggies, fruit, etc.) make sure you remove it after a day so it doesn't go bad!
