teddy's thread!!
a place for me to keep (and share!) update on my male syrian teddy!
some facts about him:
- he is around 7-8 months old i think?? he was returned to the pet store by different owners before i bought him and i've had him for almost 6 months.
- he currently lives in a bin cage that has around 665 sq in of floorspace!!
- i feed him vitakraft vitasmart and oxbow pellets, supplementing with freeze dried chicken cat treats as well
- i use carefresh bedding for him
- he has a 9" silent runner, and his back does not curve at all
- he doesn't like getting picked up very much, but will take treats from my hand and will let me stroke him if he is busy eating
- he doesn't chew his wooden toys very much, but absolutely loves his whimzees!
- he is also a quirky fellow and refuses to sleep in a house, he just picked a corner of his cage
- recently (aka today) he started un-pouching food into his wheel?? don't know what to do about that
i'll probably update this thread as time goes on

Re: teddy's thread!!
Good on you for adopting Teddy and giving him a forever home. I hope you post some pics. About him unpouching his food onto his wheel, this is common in hamsters, A few of my hamsters would do that then run in the wheel and the food flying everywhere.

Yes, that first photo is funny! Teddy's so cute. How strange that someone would return him.

Re: teddy's thread!!
he got returned because the people who bought him didn't realize hamsters smell. which i think means they didn't realize theyd have to clean their cage, and i also assume that probably means they had him in a tiny kaytee cage or something.

Re: teddy's thread!!
realized i never updated this thread. so:
- teddy has certainly adjusted to his larger cage and has stopped his stress behaviours like scrabbling at the sides and such
- i recently just bought one of those small packages of kaytee clean and cozy because i’ve started not liking the carefresh because 1) it’s way more expensive and 2) it’s so solid and packs down really fast and just not great for burrowing. i really like the kaytee so far, it expanded WAY more than i thought was possible from such a tiny package. his cage is now about 60:40 carefresh and kaytee. i’m definitely going to continue purchasing the kaytee from now on.
- i recently purchased the wooden ikea knuff magazine holder and removed the bottom and made a hide/shelf. the thing is i have nothing to coat it with (i’m not concerned with him peeing on it bc he’s very good about peeing in one place) but he’s attempted chewing some of the edges (i sanded as much as i could) and i’m worries it will splinter so i took it out for tonight until i can find some info about that
- he’s still a little brat and will not chew on any wooden chews or his chewnel only on the one wicker mushroom chew from petsmart and his whimzees but of course he decided to chew on the knuff
- he still doesn’t like being held but i’ve come to accept that he’s more of a “look don’t touch” hamster and that’s okay

Re: teddy's thread!!
I have a Teddy too (the guy on the left) and he LOVES to unpouch his food onto his wheel. Maybe it's a Teddy thing?
