Smile First time bringing a hamster home: how to reduce stress?

Hello! I'm going to be bringing my first hamster home over the weekend, and I'd like to keep the process as stress-free as possible for the little guy.

The trip home will be very short, about 5 minutes or so, and his carrier cage will have a water bottle, some bedding, and a hide for him to hopefully feel safer inside. It is also well ventilated.

The weather right now is very mild, so there won't be any heat to worry about.

I will have his cage set up and ready for him, and my plan is to very quickly put him inside and let him adjust as long as he needs to.

I've had many rats before, but this is my first hamster, and I would like to make sure he is as comfortable as possible. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.

oh exciting. you may want to replace the water bottle with a bit of cucumber. Just so the water doesn't leak everywhere on the journey home. have fun getting to know your new hamster

I agree with Luna - I think since it's such a short journey home, you won't need a water bottle, but a cucumber is a great plan. It sounds like you are doing everything right! What kind of hamster are you getting? Congrats!

This is so exciting! I got my second hammy a week ago and he was very nervous. I agree with the others that you really don’t need to have a water bottle. You sound very experienced and I think you will do just fine. I am not an expert, but here are some things I have done this week with my Charlie to keep him calm.
-Talk to him about my day softly when I feed him so he gets used to my voice and knows that when he hears my voice I may give him yummies!
-Never, ever open up your hammie’s hut when they are asleep unless you absolutely have to. This freaks them out and gives them the sense that their hut isn’t safe. If I need Charlie to come out, I start talking to him and put a treat out and he will usually come walking out of his house. If you open up its hut they might go and sleep somewhere else for a few hours until he knows it’s safe.
-Don’t pick up your new hammy too much within the first week, it may cause stress! Slowly train them with treats.
-Try not to make loud noises around your little friend, they may get spooked.
-If you hear your hamster chattering their teeth, that means they are annoyed. Stop what you may be doing that is bugging them and let them be. Even hamsters can get annoyed sometimes!

I can’t wait until you bring your new BFF home! I wish you the best of luck!
