Default Miserable Hamster?

Hi all, we've had Frankie for a few months now, and he's so cute and lovely but he's so bloody miserable.

We got him a hamster heaven cage which has everything in it, you could think of to keep him entertained, but he never seems happy he's chewing his bars a lot. We get him out in his playpen a few times a week but when we do, he chews the bars and the towel laid out on the floor, he never really plays with his stuff. If you've seen the hamster heaven cage it has a green lower shelf and higher pink shelf. We thought he might be too crowded so we got rid of his lower green shelf to make more room, put his large wheel their which he ran in for a long time (which we never see him do, we presume he plays in his wheel when we go to bed) so we presumed he was happy, we put a couple of extra toys in with him, we changed his house as the house was too small before since he's grown in size, we moved his original bedding to his new house so it still had his scent and fresh food, he's got like a big coccoon now with more room. The first night he seemed to sleep in it well, then yesterday he came out through the day which is quite unlike him, went into his tube which leads to his penthouse on top of the cage, and slept their for 5-6 hours until he got up which is usually around 8pm.

This morning we came down and he's seemed to have moved a load of his bedding into his tube with a load of food horded their. He always hoards his food into his penthouse but he seems to have taken some from their into his tube. I don't really want this as i don't want the tube filling up with gone off food and bacteria. Also whenever we go near him he's so jumpy, he's just got his head popping out his tube into his penthouse, whenever we go near him he scatters straight back into his tube. Usually when we get up on a morning he's in his bed fast asleep then we don't really see him until he gets up at 8pm ish. I hope i haven't pee'd him off by changing his bed?

ok little update: He's now just sat in his penthouse staring in to thin air. I'm a little worried about this as it should be his sleep time.

Hello.. So without seeing his cage it’s hard to tell but just a few thoughts which spring to mind...
Is his substrate deep enough? Adding in - if you haven’t already - nice deep substrate and some digging sand could help him to channel his natural behaviours; I often used to scatter feed Dora and make up lots of hidey-holes for her out of bendy bridges. Perhaps lots of natural bits to chew on and some oats / wheat etc could keep him occupied? Also is his house nice and dark at night and in a quiet room?

I’m not personally a fan of tubes as they can block them up and food can go off. Maybe rethink his house... also the hamster heaven is a decent minimum size but he may eeell need bigger, like a detour, ideally?

His substrate fills the bottom of the hamster heaven cage which is 6 inch deep. We often scatter and bury his food/treats in his substrate which he loves burying for. We have alsorts of chew toys, chew sticks for him to chew on but we never see him chewing them unless he does it when we go to bed at night. He lives downstairs with us, we usually go to bed around 9pm due to work so all the lights are switched off and theirs no noise down stairs what so ever.

Yesterday he didn't move from his penthouse, he was sleeping their all day and was still their when we went upstairs at 9pm. I thought this isn't right, I didn't want to but i moved all the bedding and some of his hoarded food from the tube and put it in his house, it seemed like he had blocked himself a way past in the tube with the amount of bedding he put in their, maybe he thought he was stuck and he couldn't get back through?
Anyway we got up this morning and he was fast alseep in his bed thank god. Hopefully it was just a random night lol.

Hello

I have a Syrian male hamster, Humphrey (Mr H for short) and he's about 6 mths old.

He's housed in a Savic Sky Metro cage which I believe is very similar to the Savic Hamster Heaven that you have.

Perhaps you may wish to consider to remove the tubes & pent house as Mr H used to hoard his fd, sleep, poop & pee in there. He was loosing fur around his neck and shoulder area and his fur looks damp at times. Although he was still eating, drinking and using his wheel....he din look too happy. He was also chewing the bars slightly. I was concerned abt his hair loss, bar chewing and mostly the unhygienic condition in the tubes.

Have since removed the tubes abt 1 wk ago and am pleased to see tat his fur loss seems to have improved and although he was stressed for abit at 1st, he has gotten use to no tubes now.

I have added platforms, toys and chews for him and he seems happier now and dun chew the bars much anymore.

Hope this helps....

Cheers!

I did think of removing his tubes but he seems to love it in their on his way to the penthouse, So i didn't want to upset him.

Everything seems to have gone back to normal now anyway. He's sleeping in his house again which i am delighted about as it was really worrying me, he just doesn't seem to want to play with anything. We've got him alsorts of chews, see saw, a big wheel, toys and we hardly ever see him play with any. When he gets up at 8pm ish he just usually sits inbetween his block and his house at the back of the cage until we go to bed, then he comes out. Is this normal or does he not like us? lol

I have a hamster like that. Henry creeps about when i'm near his cage probably worrying that i'll take him out of his cage. He's not overly keen on out of cage time, doesn't seek human company or affection, he doesn't play with toys and waits till we are in bed to come out of his house to do his hamster thing. He goes on his wheel which i have to wipe once a week because he seems to get sweaty paws from running, his sand bath is usually a mess in the morning from digging in and he's found all hidden foods. He likes his cage setup and never bar chews so he's content. He is an adorable, unsociable little git, lol.

Haha so it's not just Frankie then that doesn't like us? Lol, other times though he's adorable but whenever we put him in his playpen with a load of toys, hidden treats etc he just doesn't seem to enjoy it. He either stays in his house with his roof on and sits their miserable or chews the bars, he likes his ball more than anything but after 10-15 mins he starts to chew his ball so we put him back in his cage.

Funnily enough i've just been reading your comments from December 2018 about holding and picking up your hamster, are you able to do so now? I made a thread this morning explaining we've had him 2 and a half month and haven't been able to hold him yet. Whenever we try, he runs off in the opposite direction, we put treats on the palm of our hands but he's not interested. I have tried picking him up from above even though it says not to do this but he just scurries off and i don't want to grab too hard and hurt him. Although I read on that thread the way to pick him up is to pretend he's a mouse (and keyboard mouse) and pick him up from above? Which i've read not to do, so i'm in a pickle.
