Default Does anyone else's hamster do this?

Hiya - not been HC for a while as couldn't access it for a few weeks... anyways good to be back.

Random question and I'd be interested to know if other hamsters like to store all their food in their wheel? Our Tali is using her 12 inch wheel to store it all, and loves to run on it with all the food around her.

We move the food out her wheel and scatter it around her cage, and she always moves it back into the wheel (we don't want her hurting herself).

Recently Tali is waking us up during the night when she uses the wheel due to all the food rattling about. Today it was at 2am this morning!!

What are the options other than moving her wheel out at night (which we do not want to do as she needs her wheel at all times). It's her business of putting all her food in the wheel we can't stop!

Any ideas /thoughts be most grateful. Hammies really are funny little fur balls of mischief!

Hi, never had this issue, but my immediate thought was rather than scatter it around again, where she is going to just gather it all up again and stockpile it in the wheel again, how about putting it all in 1 corner somewhere or a pile which is near where she sleeps so handy for her.

Does she have enough space where she nests for a hoard? Sometimes if their sleeping spot is smaller they will want to put their hoard somewhere else but it has to be somewhere else they feel is "safe" like their favourite wheel!

Try a bigger nest box, like a shoe box or something? If she already has a big nest she might just be a weird one. She also might just grow out of it, all of mine have done this at some point or another but never forever.

Is it an enclosed (not sure that's the right term) wheel? Maybe an open wheel would work better because the food would fall out and scatter. Never heard of a hamster hoarding in their wheel and can't really figure out why she's doing it. Mind you, hamsters have their own take on things which don't always make sense to us humans plus they are strong willed little creatures. I'm just trying to figure out why my hamster loves his smaller pie dish sand bath but turns his nose up to his new, big loaf tin one!

Is there space in her set up for a second wheel?

Thank you everyone for your advice. Sounds like all our hammies have their own funny little ways

Tali is currently living in the Savic Plaza and has a 12 inch wheel. The wheel is right next to where she sleeps, her sleeping nesting spot is a very large bendy wooden bridge. The wheel she uses is enclosed, the idea of having one not enclosed is probably the best solution. I don't think there would be space for two 12 inch wheels as not much space then for her toys.

It is so loud when she runs on the wheel with food, she is upstairs in the spare room and can be heard downstairs (when the TV is off). I'm surprised it doesn't make her deaf!

I will give it a go with moving her hoard to another corner near her (just not the wheel), but probably the best solution is trying a different wheel in her cage. Tali is about 1 year 4 months old now, so not young as such however she is tons of energy!

Does Tali have a house to nest and hoard in? My hamster has the Ferplast guinea pig (hamster version is too small for a Syrian) house which has a removable roof. I just wonder why she sleeps under a bendy bridge which is more exposed than a house. My hamster barricades his front door with substrate when he doesn't want to be disturbed which is daily. His hoard and his ceramic toilet are in the house as well so he feels safe in the there. I'm not saying Tali doesn't feel safe, I'm only throwing ideas about trying to make sense of the meals on wheels business.

Thanks Ria P for your thoughts on the house/nest , and your suggestion of the guinea pig house that you currently use. I've had a look and I can see what you mean about feeling secure.

The bendy wooden bridge is under the large shelf that came with the cage(she has x2 shelves in her cage) and is full up with tons of substrate. Its all very dark and we can not see her. The surrounding area has substrate around her nest and is up the sides of the cage where she sleeps (she is well hidden). Trying a different nest might work for her and I appreciate the advice, thank you. Will have a look on amazon / pets at home. Might be the answer to the meals on wheels thing
