Default Spot cleaning

Yesterday I got an adorable 3 month old long haired Syrian. I have not touched him yet as i am letting him settle into his cage for a few days but I am planning on spot cleaning and was wondering what the best way to find where he goes to the bathroom. I have a sand bath in his cage, is there anyway to train him to use that as a bathroom?

If you have white paper based bedding you'll usually be able to see soiled bedding in one of the corners. To encourage him you can put some of the soiled bedding in the sandbath, and you'll know if your hamster has used his sandbath as a toilet if the sand "clumps up". )
Some hamsters even likes to have an exclusive sandbath for the toilet and another one for bathing.

Usually I just take a chunk of the bedding in one of the corners and smell to it. If it smells like pee then I'll throw it out and replace it with new bedding. There is really no other way to know other than through smell.

And congrats on your new hammy!

My Syrian will go out of his way to pee in the sand. But easiest way to potty train is to wait for him to pick a pee corner, then stick the sand bath there. Voila! Potty trained.
You can sometimes spot them peeing. Smokey sort of sniffs around where he's planning to potty, then turns around and backs up to the corner with his butt kind of lifted. Then he hold still for a few seconds, and when he leaves you see this wet spot there. Oh, and it smells bad, so that's another dead giveaway.

It can take them a while to decide on one spot for peeing in so it may be hard to find to begin with, if you do find some then it's best to situate the sand tray close to that spot if you can, if you put some peed on substrate in the sand that can help encourage them to use it.
Don't over clean, even with spot cleaning, if you remove every trace of pee they will often just pick a new spot.

You'll probably be able to tell where he's peeing after a week Syrians usually choose a corner of the cage and just plonk a litter tray there.
