Question Playing With My Hamster Too Much?

Hi y'all!
My name is Bella and I'm a first time hamster owner. My little Thumper is thought to be a few months old. She was quite bitey when I first brought her home but became much more comfortable after a day. She does nibble or bite pretty hard when I maybe scare her.

I do know that you should allow hamsters a week or so to get adjusted to their new environments, but I'm not gonna lie, by day 2, I stuck my hand in the cage for her to get used to my scent and after a few times she started to climb on me.

It was very clear that she wanted out of her little cage and I laid out a bunch of toys. She seemed to be curious about the hamster ball and hopped right in. I let her roam around for a few minutes, but every since then she wants go, go, go.

Every time she sees me she comes to the edge of the cage and starts biting on the bars as to get to me so she can roam around.

My concern is that shes only been here a few days. Am I stressing her out by letting her play too much? I let her roam a few times a day. She clearly wants to go out, but has still been quite frightened and bitey when I go to pick her up.

I just want to be sure I'm not making her uncomfortable. I'm guilty to wanting to see how adorable she is playing all the time, though.

What cage does ahe have? I don’t think there’s any suitable barred cages in the US except for the Prevue and that’s still on the small side for a Syrian, especially a female.

The cage is temporary just until I get her tank fully set up. She's a dwarf so I'm hoping a 5 gallon is sufficient for now. I would be willing to upsize as she gets a bit bigger as well.

A 5 gallon isn't going to be sufficient for more than a very short amount of time even if she is a dwarf, if you are upgrading to another tank a 75 gallon would be good, a 40 gallon could also work but you wouldn't want to go smaller. I know she is still settling but even if she is a baby when a space is too small for them they will often get very active like that.

Unfortunately 5 gallons is far too small for any hamster. Even though russian dwarf hamsters are smaller, they need almost as much space as a Syrian. You’ll need atleast a 40 gallon tank for her but bigger is always better. The Prevue I mentioned before is a good size for a Russian dwarf but you’d need to add overlapping or full level platforms because it’s a bit tall for a dwarf. You could also make her a temporary bin cage, the largest Ikea bin is cheap but a good size.

Her behaviour is pretty typical of a russian that’s in too small a cage. You’re unlikely to see any improvement without upgrading her to a more suitable home
