Default Does anyone know how you could get into studying hamsters?

I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing with my life and helping to better hamster care is something I came up with. It would be nice to be one of those people who helps to find out what makes hamsters happy and how we can help them enjoy their lives more, but I have no idea how I would get there. Does anyone know where I could start or who I could speak to about that kind of thing?

There isn't any straightforward way of studying hams that I'm aware of, it's really a case of doing lots of research, reading everything you can find, mostly online as good up to date hamster books are a rarity, get to know other hamster owners & talk to them, if you can maybe join a hamster club & go to shows to meet other experienced owners.

If you're looking to gain some kind of qualification there are a couple of online distance learning type courses which include hamsters but don't focus specifically on them. One that was recommended to me was a Diploma in Small Mammal Care by Compass: https://www.compass-education.co.uk/.../asc-smacc.htm

If you're looking for a more informal way of learning, hamster clubs are often a good place to start. Even if you're not wanting to show, they are a good place to meet other enthusiasts and share ideas.

I agree with both the previous posts. When I was first thinking about getting my first hamster (years ago now!) I think I went through every website to find suitable information. One of the major ways in which I picked up the information that I know now is through this forum. It helped me massively and it's great to be able to just ask a question if you read something you aren't sure on.

Hope this helps!

i also just started studying how to best take care of my hamsters, and im not a great reader, so i went to youtube. i found the best channels for hamster care and learning about them were; ErinsAnimals, Victoria raechel, and Munchies Place. note that they are not professional hamster carers, but they are very informative and i learned a lot from them
