Question One eyed hamster questions...

Hi all! I just made this account to post this. I am a first time hamster owner and adopted a one eyed long haired syrian about two and a half weeks ago. His name is Katsu! Since bringing him home I know I've been making some mistakes in handling him, so I'm attempting to restart from 0 and build our relationship on trust.

I just wanted to ask if it is possible for anyone who has had a one-eyed ham to give any advice? I don't know if it makes him any different than a two eyed ham, but it does feel like he might need a few extra instructions.

Thank you!! >.<

Hi & welcome to HC
Congrats on your new ham, he should manage just fine with only one eye, I think the main thing will be to take care to always approach him from the side where he has his good eye so you don't startle him if he doesn't see you coming, other than that I wouldn't think he will really need to be treated any differently from any other.
Look forward to hearing more about him as he settles in.

I’ve never had a one eyed hamster but I’ve had 3 blind hamsters. Hamsters adapt very well so apart from maybe bumping into stuff after layout changes, he’ll get along just fine. He might take a little longer to gain your trust at first and like Cypher said, approach him from his good eye so you don’t startle him and talk to him first to let him know you’re there.

I agree with everyone else, make sure Katsu has a chance to see your hand, always scoop them up until they get used to you. I've never had a blind or one eyed hamster but I have had an agoraphobic one and a deaf one, sadly no longer with us. I'm sure patience will win the day and I hope you enjoy Katsu as much as I enjoy mine. I've been rescuing since 2000 and its very rewarding. Love, pamandhamsters.
