Default Trying to find a breeder/pet shop - North Lincs

Hello all!

We're trying to find a hammy to add to our family, were looking ideally for a breeder but if not possible a pet shop that sell healthy hams, were trying to avoid pets at home as they had quite the reputation for selling poorly or pregnant animals, unless their reputation has improved?

We're near the Scunthorpe area but willing to travel a short distance for the right ham!

Also I've only ever had female Syrians are the males any more relaxed in temperament or are both sexes pretty relaxed?

Thank You!

LM

Personally from my experience, females tend to be more on the go! But there are exceptions, my younger sister had a female hamster called Spook and she used to snuggle up in her lap and sleep.

As for breeders I can't help you there, but I found the breeder I get my hammies from on pets4homes.
As for pets at home, it really depends on what your local store is like. Some are good, some are still a little bit outdated on pet care. I suggest maybe visiting your local pets at home and have a look for yourself, maybe ask a couple of employees some questions about their hamsters.

Looking forward to hearing about your future ham, and good luck!

Have you had a look at the Northern Hamster Club? I'm guessing that would be the best for you & there may be some breeders close enough for you to get to.

If you can't get to a reputable breeder & do buy from a shop it's well worth having a hunt around for small independent pet shops rather than the large chain stores.

Ive had a look around p@h Scunthorpe and the staff seem knowledgeable and friendly, we dont know of any local pet shops other than one in brigg but the gent doesn't sell animals! I'm sorely tempted to return to Sheffield and buy a new ham from our lovely little pet shop, but this would mean a 45 minute journey home. Would this stress a little ham too much? Or would we ve okay transporting a ham in a car back home?

45 minutes shouldn't be any problem at all, it probably takes me about that long to get any of mine home.
You will need a carrier though with a decent amount of substrate in for your new ham to burrow down into for the journey.

The journey should be just fine, as cypher said make sure you have enough substrate in your carrier/travel cage for them to hide in.
Also, make sure there's no ceramic or heavy objects in the travel cage as this could harm your hamster.
I would also recommend not using a water bottle in case the hamster is thirsty on its journey, I would recommend using slices of cucumber as the cage would not get soaked.

For that length of journey I wouldn't worry about a water bottle, you could put a piece of cucumber in if you like but most won't really need anything during that time.
