Default Megazorb?

This thread is just out of curiosity and pure confusion so don't feel the need to reply. You see I haven't had a hamster in many years and therefore now I'm getting back into the community, I've had to pick a lot of things up since research and knowledge are forever growing.

Years ago my friends would use Megazorb bedding and it was seen as really high quality. However, since then I've noticed it's taken a bit of a downfall. I've heard multiple things from the bizarre odour to the increased dust and even my friend had little bits of it in their carpet after months!

What are your experiences with this substrate? Again this is simply just a fun investigation

Default Re: Megazorb?

I don’t know about the quality necessarily falling. I’ve used it on and off for about 6/7years probably and haven’t noticed it going downhill or changing much - although it might well have! But it was never 100% dust free to begin with - I think companies just started coming out with more dust free beddings & different options, so people probably noticed the dust more. I did when I first tried beddings like finacard & hemp but that’s to be expected.

I’m quite sure the smell issue came from how it was stored, since I’ve never had an issue with that. Then I left one bag in the shed, completely new & sealed when I didn’t have hamsters. Came back to it a few weeks later and it had that smell people describe. So i guess it must be when it gets damp or isn’t stored properly, which will vary with each megazorb supplier.

It really does get everywhere I agree, the pieces are so small but that’s another reason I like it for dwarf hams, when my robo first arrived she was already on the coloured carefresh but it just looked like she was running through an obstacle course so that had to go!

Anyway its main advantage is probably holding burrows, it’s also good at odour control. Drawback would be that it has more dust than some other beddings which is why mixing with another more dust free bedding works a bit better with it. I have used it alone though a number of times and not had issues. Not sure if I’ll be buying it again at least for a while but I do like to change substrates up every so often anyway.
