Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
I know but it's one of those hamster myths that get spread around I really wouldn't worry about it.

Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
You're probably right if it's occasional but after reading it could cause liver problems if given in excess I just decided not to bother.

Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
Hi guys, i didn't want to create a new thread so thought i'd ask here.
We got a playpen for him yesterday, played with him last night a bit and managed to stroke him without scaring him away, everything went well. He was running around like crazy for the first 10 mins seemed to be loving it, then quietened down and just stood in a corner for a while. Is this normal? I understand it was new to him but we didn't keep him out too long, about 15-20 mins tops i'd say. Whilst he was in his playpen i did a good spot clean in his cage of his poo, found his pee spot so got rid of the damp substrate and burried some of his food in his substrate whilst i was their. We're trying to change his diet to harry hamster instead of the muesli he's been on, so i scattered the odd bit of his new food along with his muesli, i'm trying to gradually change it. When he went back in his cage from his playpen, he seemed very quiet, he just stood in his litter tray for ages, i'd say 15 mins and didn't move. I didn't do a full clean of his cage, just a good spot clean really. Could this have upset him? I left his bedding in same place but got rid of some food their and replaced it with fresh food so everything was still in the same place for him. Here is my little baby anyway Finally managed to get a half decent pic of him

Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
He is lovely They do sometimes go and sit in the corner of the playpen - usually means they've had enough and want to go back to the cage. Do you have some hidey places and toys in the playpen - something they can go and sit in (mug on its side eg) or a tissue box.
He was probably a bit stunned when he got back in the cage and found things slightly changed.
It might have been better to leave his hoard alone as he's only just settling in. If it was pee'd on you need to remove/replace most of it but always best to leave some of the old hoard.
Is he not using his litter tray? Maybe move it to where he was peeing.

Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
I've also found they get a bit freaked in the playpen if you leave them on their own - and they can also tell when you're doing something in their cage! Sometimes it's better to do the spot cleaning when they're in the cage so they can see the changes and it's less of a shock. And to be with them in the playpen and talk to them so they don't feel scared. I actually used to get in the playpen as well sometimes and they run all over you (helps them to get used to your scent and presence) but keep well away from the sides! Or they can run up your arm and jump out!

Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
That all sounds fine to me, they can get a bit spooked during or after the first few sessions in the playpen but that's ok if you keep sessions quite short like that they soon get used to it.
I doubt spot cleaning would have worried him much, he will sense something's a bit different but not enough to worry him, it was most likely just a reaction to being in the playpen.
Personally I always spot clean with them out of the cage, I think a big hand pinching their stuff while they're in there is too stressful for them!

Re: New hamster sleeping in toilet
My partner was with him whilst I spot cleaned the cage so he wasn't on his own, I didn't want him to he on his own in a strange environment. Our friend gave us some more hamster toys so we put a coconut house in their with him, he didn't use it much but went in it a couple of times and I have a square block in his cage with holes in each side I put in his pen too along with a see saw and couple of logs that were familiar to him. He pees right next to his litter tray so I moved it more right in the corner where he pees, but it's right beneath his food bowl so he keeps bashing his head on his food bowl lol, our shelves in the cage have holes cut out for their bowls, so I had to move it away just slightly. He does poo in their now and again, but he's pooing everywhere at the moment, more so right in front of his house. The playpen is too small for us to fit in, but we will buy more of it at some point to extend it so we can sit in with him.
I have done the odd spot clean before whilst he's in the cage, but most of it you can't get to unless you take the cage off, which is why I gave it a good spot clean whilst he was in his pen.
