I have attached the image, I hope i've done the it correctly, i'm new here

I am going to take the old wheel out as i don't know if he's ever used it and it's too small anyway so it may stand their but ideally i'd like to fit it on the side of the cage just to make that little bit more room. We do plan on getting the bigger cage for him soon anyway, would you say wait till we've had him a couple of week before we start moving him around again?

Also when should we start trying to tame him? We've only had him 4 days but when he's up and about we always get up to see him, try talk to him, get used to our voices and our scent. Should we do this or just let him be for now? Sometimes we're watching TV, we turn round and he's stood on his shelf on his back feet just looking at us, it's so cute, we get up to say hello but then he just runs in his tube as if to say "haha you can't get me". He's started spending a lot of time in his tube, we went to bed last night, he was falling asleep in their, we got up this morning and he was still their. Hopefully he will have been out since but it's hard to tell, is this normal though? He's started pooping in their and taking food in their, you can see his head and bum in the right hand side of the tube, that's where he usually stays for a long time. I know it's still very early days but just hope he isn't too scared of us. I tried handing him a treat this morning, he didn't take it but he was giving me a good sniff for a good 20 seconds, he put his nose on my finger, hopefully this is a good sign he isn't scared of us?

I would just remove the tube, they can be a real problem unfortunately, if a ham sleeps, stores food & sometimes pees in there too it quickly becomes very unhygienic & can lead to health problems, also it creates the problem with taming that you're already seeing.
The cage looks very empty too at the moment which will make him feel more nervous, I would put some cardboard boxes, bendy bridges or similar in to fill the space a bit & give him little hideout places, you really need more substrate too, it's difficult with the shelf but fill the base as much as you can.
It sounds as though he's ready to interact with you & if you remove the tube you will find it easier as he's less likely to hide away completely when you approach the cage, you can begin just by offering treats through the bars & then see if you can get him to climb into something like a cardboard tube or anything you can safely transport him in & use either a playbin. playpen or the bath with a towel in the bottom to interact with him out of the cage, short sessions to begin with & let him get used to you & hands, just running over hands at first then you can move on to holding him & eventually picking him up, just go at his pace. It helps to put toys, maybe a wheel & other things to explore in the play area.

I did think of removing the tube to help taming but I didn't want to upset him by removing it. It seems to be his favourite place when he's out. We have other toys for him, loads in fact but didn't want to overwhelm him too much to start off with, we was going to add them gradually. I cut a little cardboard box out of a cereal box to transport him. Will maybe try that tonight. Is it best to try through the day or in the evening? He mostly sleeps through the day but gets up now and again to grab some food or go to the toilet.

It's best to do the taming/interacting in the evening when he's naturally more awake & active.
I know it might upset him if you remove the tube but better sooner than later as it will just become more of a problem, if you give him other things in the cage & the cardboard box discussed before as an alternative house he will soon get over it.
They don't tend to be overwhelmed by lots of toys, obviously they need a bit of space to move around & hunt for food etc but they do feel vulnerable with lots open space & too little substrate & that can make them nervous & harder to tame.
I find if you do need to make changes when they're new it's best to just get it over & done with sooner then if need be give them a couple of days to settle again before taming rather than finding you keep needing to make small changes & alterations which will keep unsettling them.

Thank you, will certainly do that. Another thing the clerk at pets at home was wrong about then, he said 1 bag of that substrate will be just right for that cage. Will give that a go this evening and see how we go.

I know there's a limit to what you can do with your current cage but if you have a look through this thread it might give you a better idea of how people set up their hamster cages, some set ups are more suitable than others but it should give you some ideas.

Thanks Cypher. After a chat with my partner, we've decided to get the Savic Hamster Plaza cage. How would we set him in his new cage? I will put the substrate from his current cage into the new one as it will have his scent etc, could we lift him up in his house when he's sleeping and put him in that way or will that be too much for him when he wakes up? Their will be plenty more room and toys for him in his new one.

I would definitely move him when he's awake, do you have a carrier or something you can put him in for a short while when you do the change, it will take a little time to take the substrate out of his current cage (you can just put that on top of all the new substrate you'll need) arrange how the house, wheel, new toys etc will best fit in the cage etc so it's better to wait until they're awake then get them to climb into a tube or whatever you might have found by then that he's happy to climb into for transport then put him in a carrier with some substrate to burrow down into, maybe a few treats or some food to keep him busy then you can leave him safe while you do the switch.
Be prepared for how much substrate you will need for the new cage! It will probably be more than you expect & you won't want to be adding more to top if up as he's settling into the new cage.
For larger cages Fitch is probably the most economical & it's lovely substrate but I think the 10 & 20kg bags are still out of stock, another good alternative which comes in fairly large bags is Kaytee clean & cosy (white only)/

I have an Amazon box I could put some substrate in with a couple of treats and toys. I have a hamster ball too I could put him in to run about whilst we sort his new cage. It shouldn't take long to do as I'd have it set up and all the new substrate in, it'd just be a case of putting his old substrate on top, and arranging his toys and house etc. At the moment we're using care fresh I think it is? I will have a look at the pet store tomorrow though when I pick the cage up.

Definitely not the ball, they are so unsafe & it would be stressful for him to be trapped in a ball possibly bumping into things while you do all that, if you can make a box safe & escape proof that would be ok, this is the kind of carrier I meant, they're quite handy to have anyway as you can put your ham in while cage cleaning if need be & they're also useful if you did ever need to go to a vet.
Carefresh is ok but it does work out expensive when you're filling a larger cage, I can't remember what size bags it comes in now but I don't think they're all that big.

Hamster balls can be quite handy for carrying your ham from the cage to the play area if they're happy to climb in but that's about all they're good for, hams don't get any benefit from running around in a ball where they can't see or use their sense of smell to get around. A good playpen or bin/bath is much better as you can interact with them & give them plenty of things to explore & enjoy while out of the cage, they get plenty of running exercise in the wheel.
