Re: new hamster ? in same room
thanks every one for all the wonderfull suggestions,
i do think i should put that safety of the dwarf as my priority, i've thought about it, and i do want to consider getting an animal that would rather live in groups. ive done a bit of research on small animals, and found that gerbils may be the right sort of animal for me. but i see that they can be slightly noisy, would this be a problem for poko ?

Gerbils are wonderful, I don’t know about noisy they’re not much different to hamsters really in my experience. Just very energetic and can be a bit of a handful when it comes to handling but they’re generally quite friendly. Female mice could also be an option, they sound like lots of fun and you can have a colony of them. I think either would be fine with Poko.

Re: new hamster ? in same room
Silly me. I meant if he felt confident having had one hamster then he had some experience before keeping a pair (even if it was a Syrian and not a dwarf!).
I know there are lots of views on cage sizing for pairs. And some people and breeders who successfully keep pairs. I would always suggest just one dwarf hamster to a new owner, but have also had the wish to try and successfully keep a pair and nearly did so with robos but didn't because was only one robo left. Although I do think the views are changing generally towards keeping pairs not being a good idea at all.
I think gerbils sounds a good idea if you want a group of pets that happily live together without the issues. They do need a large cage though and deep bedding, some tunnels in the bedding and some height. I've seen the Living World Eco habitat used for good gerbil set ups - it's very large (about 115cm x 60cm) and quite expensive.
Or Rats? Rats do need to live in groups -cages also need to be a good size but can be more compact than an Eco habitat - 100 x 50 and quite tall.

Re: new hamster ? in same room
I keep my 20 gallon gerbil tank right next to my hamster's bin cage and I have no problems at all. Gerbils aren't particularly noisy, unless you've given them some cardboard to chew on, then it's noisy. My hamster doesn't seem bothered by my gerbils at all, and vice versa.
If you are going to be getting gerbils, a pair of gerbils fit very comfortably in a 10 or 20 gallon glass tank. I don't know if these are cost-effective or widely available where you live, but I was able to get my 20 gallon for $20 plus tax when my local pet shop had a dollar-per-gallon sale. I think I paid about $50 for my 10 gallon when there wasn't a sale. Gerbils really don't need a ton of room, smaller is safer. Anything above 20 gallons runs the risk of gerbils becoming territorial and could lead to de-clanning. As long as the tank is deep enough for sufficient bedding, it doesn't have to be super big.

Re: new hamster ? in same room
10 gallons really is very small - don’t think it would comfortably house any rodent and this is for two of them. Gerbils are very active and do need space. Yes there is a risk of declanning and fighting but you run that risk with most small animals that live in a pair or group anyway. It’s important to find a balance between what is safe and what can provide them with a good & enriching life, plenty of gerbils do well in cages larger than 40 gallons.
