Default Shipping hamsters

How are baby hamsters shipped from their mum's to the big stores like Pet Co? I can't imagine there is a breeder within a few hours drive from each store around the nation. Because they are young do they simply adjust easily? I'm just curious what they have gone through before they reach the stores available to us.

Obviously different pet stores will have their own supplies but there are some awful stories about them being in overcrowded crates in aeroplanes.

Google "How Hamsters are shipped to pet stores" The first link that came in had a lot of info.
