He’s just being a hamster They always go where you don’t want them to. If he’s not tame yet also he may be more jumpy. Maybe do some bathtub taming sessions so he gets used to handling more. It isn’t that he doesn’t like you - he is just scared and hasn’t had time to build trust with you yet. Another tip - I used to find it depended what time of the evening it was as to how active or relaxed they are. Personalities vary but 6pm ish up 8pm and after 10pm our last hammy was extremely active and wanting to be off. So between 8pm and 9pm was better for out of cage time as he was in nap mode then.

My last hamster was a bit like that - any edge anywhere she had to look over it. Sometimes she fell off, sometimes she jumped. She generally expected me to catch her. I had to watch her like a hawk.

I've never had a hamster that does not do this. They will always go to an edge, try to see if there is a floor down there, not see one and assume there is and ... well, you catch them because you stay close! I find our stairs are a good play area, carpeted and not so tall as to be a danger, plus gives plenty of climbing exercise.

our hamsters jump off the ledges in their cages!

Nothing can be done to stop it, our male winter white just find it easier than just walking down the ladder. We just make sure that there is plenty of bedding to jump onto in that spot (he has a specific spot to jump), also we brought the ledges down to a safe height so its not much of a fall. He seems to love jumping face first..

He doesn't jump off the bed or couches though.. our female is a bit clumsy and she doesn't seems to jump off the couches/bed either, but she just walks off the side of your leg if you have her on the lap though and we have to stop/catch her. Maybe its just part of some of their personalities.
