Re: Wheel size
Right now I have an 8 inch flying saucer wheel for my relatively small male Syrian, but I am planning on upgrading to an 11 inch wodent wheel as soon as I get the money for it. It's not super big but also a good size for Syrians, as they do evidently grow as they get older. The wodent wheel is a little expensive but I know that it's available in lots of places, idk where you live but you can order it online hope this helps

Re: Wheel size
An 11" diameter wheel is absolutely fine for an average sized syrian. Flying saucers are different however - 8" is far too small for a flying saucer - it needs to be 12" for a syrian - they don't run properly on a saucer and can bend and not run on it properly. Whereas some smaller hamsters would be fine with an 8" wheel but 11" is better as they can run easier in a larger wheel and it's the size most people go for. For a particularly large syrian there are 12" wheels.

Re: Wheel size
If a 27cm diameter wheel doesn't fit in well you may have to readjust the layout of the cage, changing levels etc. Hamster cages are best with larger floor area and less height - so you can fit more in, they can have normal ground dwelling behaviours, and less fall risks from a height.

Re: Wheel size
What cage have you got? Or dimensions of it? 17cm in length isn’t cutting it for a Syrian wheel, you’d need over 30cm for the length of the wheel alone.

Re: Wheel size
I must have misread that - about 17cm - do you mean the cage is 17" in length?
If the cage is very small (as in floor area) you might be better making an 80 x 50cm approx bin cage and that will fit most 11" wheels in easily.
