Default Sand bath for Syrian

Hiya all,
I’m interested in investing into a sand bath for Coco.
As you all know she is a Umbrous Golden Syrian hamster.

I am aware you need to use chinchilla sand.
I have a couple questions about the sand bath.

What size dish and what type of dish?
How often should I change the sand? (I’m aware you need to sieve it everyday.)
Should I keep it in the cage all the time?

Thanks.

I have always kept my syrian hamster's sand baths in with them at all times.

My current boy has a mini lasagne dish from poundland, a past hamster (Gopal rip) used to !ove love love rolling in his sand bath so I gave him a plastic corner litter tray designed for rabbits!

You will soon see how often it needs cleaning. Good luck.

Ps some of my past syrians have not used their sand baths at all.

Sand baths can be kept in a Syrian cage all the time.
I use a small ceramic baking dish.
Majority of Syrians will use their sand baths as a litter tray so the frequency of cleaning will depend upon each individual.

Noodles has a mini lasagne dish too - it stays in all the time - he uses it for his toilet - he doesn't go anywhere else but in there so I have to clean it out each day

I use a small ceramic dish too. Mine doesn't use it as a toilet so my sand lasts ages- I just sieve it through every week and replace it whenever needed. I keep it in there all the time.
I am sure you know this but make sure it is sand and not dust .

Ghost has a deep sandbath which was an old cake type tin, he used to have a good dig in it and roll around in it too, nowadays he just pees in it, and only in one corner the very far one.

Thanks for this thread. Please could someone kindly give dimensions. I'm struggling to find dimensions for mini lasagne dish from poundland. I'm not from the UK so have no idea what size that would be.

Mine currently has a 2Ib loaf tin, ca 25cm long and 12cm wide because it fits perfectly in the space between his house and cage front. I don't think they're all that fussy about size as long as its long enough for the whole hamster to get in and allow room to dig and ideally keep the sand inside the container.

You can use whatever fits best for the space intended. You may even have a dish sitting around in your kitchen or house you can use. I include a photo of my hamster's sand bath.
