Default Advice on transporting hamsters

Hi not posted in a while as lots happening at the moment with relocating. Exciting and stressful time ! Our Tali will be travelling on a 4 hour car journey with us. She will be travelling in her travel cage (cat carrier) for this journey. We're worried as any trips to the vets (5 minute car journey) has made Tali quite anxious. Has anyone travelled with their hamsters on long trips and how did your hamster cope. We want to make the journey as comfortable and stress free as possible for Tali.

In her carrier she has a comfy blanket and we put bedding with this. Would cucumber be sufficient for water intake? We hope she will sleep for most of journey.

Any advice would be great. Thank you!

I travelled for six hours with my hamsters (six of them at the time) in small pet carriers. Lots of fitch bedding some cucumber and ... they were totally fine.

A cat carrier sounds huge for a hamster! Mine had guinea pig carriers (that seem waay too small for guinea pigs imo).

This kind of thing but not from pets at home as I dont like their breeding ethics.

I took my hammies up to Scotland from Birmingham a few years ago! I'd say a cat carrier is a bit big tbh..I have my 6 rats in a cat carrier! I'd get a guinea pig size one, lots of bedding to bury and apples and cucumber fine. If you do a stop off at a service station, i'd offer a water bottle but keeping a smaller space will seem more secure and she should soon settle down to the sound of the engine x

Thank you flowerfairy and amethyst ice for you advice. With your longer journey's and more hamsters travelling, our 4 hour journey with one hamster should be fine I agree the cat carrier is very large, Tali has got a smaller carrier suitable advertised for hamsters, she dislikes it and she became very stressed the last time she was in it. I'll make enquiries for a guinea pig advertised sized carrier for Tali (thanks for link), as decent size (bigger than our small carrier but half the size of the cat carrier). We'll be stopping on the journey at least once and can offer Tali a drink from her bottle.

I know it goes against the common belief that bigger is always better but it's usually safer for a hamster to travel in a smaller enclosure as there is less space for a hamster to be thrown around in if the vehicle was to break suddenly.

The kind of carrier that is often advertised for guinea pigs is a good option and allows for you to pop a cardboard box in for your hamster to make a nice nest in. I usually have plenty of cucumber chunks to provide moisture during the journey and if you soak them in water overnight, they can absorb even more water.
