Default Not seeing my hammy

Is it just me or does anyone else hardly see their hamster. My new boy Humphrey is 16 weeks old and doesn't appear until at least 10 pm. I've tried to tempt him out sooner with food but he just takes it and goes back in. He does enjoy play time out of the cage but this isn't happening very often and I feel we're missing fun times. My previous hamster came out much earlier and was always chomping at the bit to be out but this boy is so chilled and likes his bed. I don't suppose there's anything I can do here?

Sometimes they do tend to get up later in the winter, keep the room he's in nice & warm (around 10-20C) day & night & just keep trying to encourage him to come out a little earlier & he might come round & start to come out more.

I hardly see either of my two hamsters. They seem to wait until it is totally dark and quiet to be more active. I see them getting a drink and a little food. Unfortunately my hamster who was out more and loved cuddles, playtime etc died awhile ago.

Yes I think I'll look at the temperature, it may be a little cold. He's much more laid back than my previous hamster, even when he does come out it takes him about an hour to get pulled together, cleaning himself etc so it's really late when he's ready to get going.

I only just noticed my typo there! It should have said 18-20C, sorry!
If the room is a bit cold that could be it then.

I agree with everyone. Hamster due tend to sleep more in the winter.

Warmth does make a difference. Our Syrian is quite an active boy but only comes out about every 2 or 3 days and if the room is nice and warm he comes out more and seems more interested. They do feel the cold and usually build a large nest as soon as the weather starts to get cooler at the end of August. So also make sure his house is big enough to build a big nest (if it isn’t he may build a nest under a shelf or something). And also that he has enough depth of substrate to burrow down in and for some insulation.

It’s important they don’t get too cold especially when frosts and icy weather start or they can go into torpor (what people think of as hibernation but it’s not a natural thing and can lead to them not coming out of it). Winter is a time when we do sadly hear of hamsters who have gone into torpor.

Along with that they vary in personality. Our last Syrian was a very lazy laid back boy and slept a lot and never wanted to come out of his cage - so I had to get him out regularly. He would go to sleep on my knee under a blanket! Our current one is very active when out of the cage. If they don’t want to come out it’s important to get them out every few days for variety and to keep them tame and bonded. I used to put a tube in the cage or over the house door with a treat at the far end and then lift the tube out when he went in - with a hand over both ends of the tube. You can then put one end of the tube into a hamster ball so he walks into the ball and you can pop the lid on and carry him to where you want to let him out safely.

He's only been out once this week, he still wasn't out at 12 o clock last night which is frustrating when you need to go to bed. Hopefully things will change when the warmer weather comes but in the meantime I'll try and keep the room warm and yes he does have deep bedding. I'm going to try the tube trick as I don't think coming out once a week is enough and want to keep him tame as he is now.

Boris is a sleepy boy I had to persuade him out with some of his fav treats last night we had a quick cuddle and a play but hes happy to just snooze. And he’s in the most toasty room so he normal sits with his head out of his nest surveillance style and the rest stays toasty!
Every time I try and put a shoe box to keep him warm but he removes his nest so I’ve given up on that so don’t worry if your hammy removes from a hole or something

My syrian male hamster, Tarak gets at almost exactlyn10.30 each night. Roll on Spring and hopefully more hamster time. I am waaay too tired by 10.30 to stay awake for longer than a few mins of chatting to him time.
